6003 wk 8 discussion – Strategies for Academic Portfolios
Response – Taylor B.
The discussion post presents suggestions on the strategies that can be applied for academic portfolios. The discussion post is presented in two parts. The first part explains the strategies that can be applied to include academic activities and accomplishments into the professional development goals. Firstly, discussing growth and development. This strategy involves discussing the academic, professional and career progression with a focus on the unique competencies at each step. Secondly, including evidence-based practice with a focus on with a focus on the significant practice changes undertaken either as a leader or member of the implementation team. The second part of the paper discusses how the career progression aligns with the university’s focus on social change, explaining that the career progression presents opportunities for making meaningful change. Still, there may be a need for additional information in the paper. Firstly, including academic activities and accomplishments into the professional goals can be achieved by turning the goals achievement into an ongoing process that is always moving forward, seeks to improve at every turn, and focuses on acquiring new and more effective concepts. Secondly, planning for achieving the goals by ensuring that the academic activities are embedded in efforts to achieve the professional development goals (Weberg et al., 2019). In addition, there is a need to explain that the professional development goals align with the university’s emphasis on social change through presenting a learning gradient that presents new concepts and develops new competencies that are helpful in creatively solving problems (Schunk, Meece & Pintrich, 2014). Overall, the discussion post offers an informative analysis of strategies for academic portfolios. 6003 wk 8 discussion – Strategies for Academic Portfolios

Strategies for Academic Portfolios
According to a journal article online, “A professional portfolio is evidence of the nurse’s skills, achievements, and professional experience” (Burns, 2018). Two strategies for including academic activities and accomplishments into my professional development goals within my professional portfolio includes discussing growth and development as well as evidence-based practice.

The first strategy that I have chosen for including academic activities and accomplishments into my professional development goals is discussing growth and development. As a nurse, there are many opportunities for growth in one’s practice. Growth and development can include one’s knowledge, goals, and progress. For example, as a registered nurse (RN), I can include my growth by discussing the process of obtaining my Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN), employment in the emergency room (ER), employment within a dialysis clinic, advancement to the charge nurse, and improving my knowledge and skills within the Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) program. Every day as an RN, I find a different way to grow in my practice. An article online sates, “To continue growing as a nurse, it is necessary for a practicing nurse to expand his or her competencies to include skills like patient assessment, nursing research, and nurse leadership” (Regis college, n.d.). Taking opportunities to grow and develop as a nurse, is important for one’s knowledge and to promote high-quality care for patients.6003 wk 8 discussion – Strategies for Academic Portfolios
Including evidence-based practice in my professional development goals is also an important strategy. This portrays a nurse’s level of expertise. A few examples of evidence-based practice in nursing include infection control, smaller IV catheter size for blood administration, and providing oxygen to patients with COPD (ASU, 2018). Infection control is essential right now in the United States with the spread of COVID-19. As a nurse, a few ways to practice evidence-based practice with infection control is wearing a mask, washing hands before and after interaction with a patient, appropriate glove changes, and wearing a face shield (within my current practice).
When using the two strategies, growth and development, and evidence-based practice within my professional development goals, both will help improve my knowledge and guide me to provide the best care to my patients. This applies while I am an RN as well as when I become an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN). Walden University is very focused on social change. The school website states, “Our founding principle will continue to guide us as we embrace new ways to learn and new ways to shape a better world” (Walden university, 2020). When reaching my professional goal of becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) through growing, developing, and using evidence-based care, this aligns with the University’s emphasis on social change. Practicing these strategies while receiving my education through Walden, helps me to be apart of shaping a better world.

In the realm of marketing, a successful branding strategy is one of the most important contributors to organizational success. A solid branding strategy can help add visibility and credibility to a company’s products.
Similarly, nurse-scholars can build a personal brand to add visibility and credibility to their work. You can begin building your brand by developing and maintaining an academic portfolio. Such an activity can help share the results of your efforts and contribute to your success.
