One of the more common statistical tests used in nursing research is the independent samples t-test. It is applied when comparing two independent research groups on a continuous independent variable. As suggested by the name of this statistical test, the groups being compared must be different and have different participants. In addition, it requires a continuous dependent variable (Grove & Cipher, 2020). For instance, a nursing research can ask in a study of students from different cities if there are significant differences in the mean infection scores for the two cities. The significance of the t-value from the independent samples t-test conducted on the scores from the two cities would determine if the mean difference in infection is statistically significant. The independence samples t-test is a parametric test that makes use of an independent (grouping) variable, and dependent (test) variable. The independent variable must be categorical with two or more groups. The dependent variable must be continuous with the level of measurement being either ratio or interval level of measurement. In addition, the cases must have values on both the independent and dependent variables. The hypotheses presented when conducting the test are that the two populations means are equal or the difference between the two population means is zero for the null hypothesis, and the two population means are not equal or the difference between the two population means is not equal to zero for the alternative hypothesis (Grove & Cipher, 2020).
