Demographic information

George Lucas is a 35-year-old Black American male. He has been married to Jane Lucas, a 32-year-old woman for the last 10 years. Mr. and Mrs. Lucas have a family of two children, Edna Lucas and Humphrey Lucas who are 7 and 10 years old respectively.

Presenting problem

George Lucas is a strict disciplinarian. He reports that he grew up with strict parents who used to punish him often as a kid something that made him develop the same behavior and attitude towards his two children. Sometimes he would be forced to carry heavy objects from the house to the backyard or conduct all the house chores without help from anyone. He describes the punishment as very painful considering his small age. Lucas has transferred the same behavior to his children which has attracted the attention of the social workers as his children complain of corporal punishment particularly on Humphrey. History of present illness

Lucas has no history of drug abuse or addictions. However, he has a criminal history associated with petty theft during his teenage years as reported by his father.

Past psychiatric history

George Lucas has not been diagnosed with any mental condition since childhood as reported by his father Lucas senior.

Medical history

Lucas has been mentally, physically and physiologically well and of good health over the years as noted by his father. However, the wife reports a recent diabetes diagnosis.

Substance use history

The parents of George Lucas report that their son has no history of drug and substance abuse. Additionally, no member of the family has reported any history of abusing drugs.

Developmental history

Mr. Lucas has no had any developmental delays throughout his stages of development as reported by his father.

Family psychiatric history

The family has no mental health issues history.

Psychosocial history

Mr. George Lucas is able to interact with the parents, family and friends in a friendly manner. He is described as a social individual who is able to create relationships and maintain them over a long time.

History of abuse and/or trauma

George experienced physical abuse from the parents n form of corporal punishment characterized by heavy house chores and backyard organization activities. However, no report available for any other form of abuse. He reports to have inherited this type of punishment from his parents and has thus not been involved in any other form of abuse towards his children. Comprehensive Client Family Assessment

Review of systems:

Physical assessment

The client is a tall well-built African American man. He works out often and hence has a strong physic. Mr. George Lucas is a smart and cheerful person.

Mental status exam

The mental status examination involved the whole family. The counselling sessions need to be attended by Mr. George Lucas, his wife Jane, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lucas senior as well as the children, Edna and Humphrey. A family therapy helps to address the social needs of a client and to guide the family members on the kind of support to offer their patient (Franklin, Bolton & Guz, 2019). According to Wheeler (2014), family psychological therapy sessions address the root cause problem of the current mental condition of a psychiatric patient. George has acknowledged his problem and is determined to receive help to stop imposing heavy punishment on his children. He feels that his kids should not undergo the pain that he was inflicted by his parents. He also hopes to improve his relationship with his wife and kids by attending these psychiatric sessions.

Differential diagnosis

Mr. and Mrs. George Lucas inherited several traits and behaviors from their parents which are currently affecting their parenting roles and style. This includes the way of disciplining children. The fact that they got married very young could also have resulted in them copying most of the behaviors from the parents (Dattilio & Collins, 2018).

Case formulation

An assessment from the social worker will be conducted to determine why Mr. George inherited the form of corporal punishment towards his kids from his father. They will identify ways in which the client can be assisted in order to stop this behavior (Szapocznik, & Hervis, 2020). He works at the airport as a casual employee. During the weekends, he joins his friends for beer occasionally taking 7 to 8. Mrs. Lucas has no criminal record or history of drug and substance abuse. Treatment plan

The treatment of Mr. Lucas will entail the elimination of anger and resentment held towards his parents. This has been accumulated since his childhood days and have been spilled to his children. Another treatment intervention will involve patient education whereby, the client will be taught safe skills and effective ways of disciplining his children (Carr, 2019).
