During the week-long pediatric clinical rotation, I gained a lot of valuable knowledge and experience. Nevertheless, because of the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, there was a hurry to complete the task, and safety precautions became the primary concern for healthcare professionals. The majority of parents were presenting their kids to the facility for vaccine renewals and well-child checkups, despite the fact that some kids came with illness clinical manifestations. Parents will have excellent opportunities to speak and learn about key healthcare concerns that affect their children, according to Turner (2018). One of the difficulties I encountered during these trips was determining which vaccines were suitable for which age group to provide. My preceptor is a wealth of knowledge, and he was always teaching and updating me on this subject. During every visit, he would inquire about the proper vaccination and what I believed the proper diagnosis should be, along with my rationale for my decision.
A 19-month-old Hispanic boy, born at full term and weighing 7lbs 2 oz, presented to the clinic with his mother, who said that “S.B. has been coughing since last night with a fever of 100.1.” She gave the infant Motrin when the fever became 99.1. The baby woke up this morning with a runny nose and sneezing. He was diagnosed with a common cold. A common cold is a viral illness of the nose and throat that affects the infant. Babies are particularly susceptible to the common cold, which is partly due to the fact that they are often exposed to older children. Aside from that, they have not yet established immunity to a wide range of pathogens. The majority of newborns have six to eight colds throughout their first year of life. Coughing, fever, runny nose, sneezing, and nasal congestion are all frequent signs and symptoms of a common cold in a newborn, as does nasal congestion (Pappas, 2018) Clinical Experience Essay Assignment Paper. I gave the child Motrin for the treatment of a fever caused by a cold. These are more effective and less dangerous alternatives to aspirin. I did not provide any Cough medicine to the kid since it is not safe for infants and small children to take them. Other than the common cold, we suspected influenza and pharyngitis.

I gained numerous valuable insights from my clinical experience this week that will be useful to me in my future career as an Advanced Practice Nurse. It was essential to establish effective listening skills as the main teaching objective. As an advanced practice, nurses may encounter a wide range of patients based on their age. It is thus critical to listen to their complaints carefully and efficiently in order to fully comprehend their issues. I also realized that I needed to educate the guardians and give them time to process their emotions since they were frightened and concerned for the child’s health. I also learned that as a clinician, one must be compassionate with patients and their parents as they go through the learning experience. I ought to realize that understanding a client’s health literacy or the health literacy of their parents is a critical component of making educated healthcare choices that strive to optimize health, treatment, and wellbeing for both the patient and their parents (Cheng, et al., 2016). My preceptor was compassionate with every patient, and it is wise to urge the guardians of such individuals to adopt a teach-back strategy, which we may use to explain and highlight the facts we are trying to convey Clinical Experience Essay Assignment Paper.
