The Prevention Of The COVID-19 Spread Discussion Paper
Discussion Response
Hi Frances,
Great post! I enjoyed reading your post about quality initiative to curb the spread of Covid-19. It is evident that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a major effect on our lives. As nurses, we have critical roles and responsibilities to play during the COVID-19 pandemic. I agree with the measures you have mentioned regarding reducing the spread of the virus. It is true that re-initiation of limiting visitors to patients to reduce the spread is a quality initiative towards reducing the disease spread. This prevents visitors from bringing Covid-19 virus into healthcare institutions during times of community transmission; the threat of bringing SARS-CoV2 into facilities grows as community transmission increases (Arora et al., 2020). I like that you acknowledge the role of vaccines. The vaccination against COVID-19 is a crucial preventative step that will aid in the prevention of the COVID-19 spread. COVID-19 vaccinations are now extensively available in the United States, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises that everyone over the age of 12 be immunized against the virus. With all the measures put in place, I believe that we will one day eradicate Covid-19 The Prevention Of The COVID-19 Spread Discussion Paper.

One quality initiative from my workplace has been re-initiation of limiting visitors to patients to reduce communicable disease exposure. This is the most recent initiative in addition to mandadory employee vaccination by August 15th, COVID PCR tests upon patient admission, and symptom screening for employees online before the start of the shift. The goal of the intervention is to reduce the spread of COVID-19 to both staff and patients. There are barriers to implementation of these initiatives such as reduced patient satisfaction. There have been multiple complaints, especially from our palliative patients; patients express lack of support and meeting emotional needs at end-of-life without family at the bedside. Exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis and no guidelines are in place. In regards to COVID-19 vaccination status, there has been a lot of push back from staff which has proven to be a large barrier to the successful implementation. On my walk in to work 8/13 there was actually a small protest outside the hospital from both staff and community members fighting against the mandate. Being fairly new, there still is limited data and longitudinal studies on the success of vaccination. However, current data still shows few reports of reinfection. When analyzing antibodies in an article from the Journal of Inflammation Research, “the IgG antibody titers against all SARS-CoV-2 proteins, essentially N, RBD, and spike, remained high (Jamiruddin et al., 2021).” Due to staff and patient perceptions translating research from the pandemic into practive has proven difficult The Prevention Of The COVID-19 Spread Discussion Paper.
