Qualitative Research Designs Essay Example Discussion Paper

Qualitative research is a method that entails obtaining data from open-ended questions, first-hand observations, conversational communication, recordings made in natural settings and analyzing of non-numerical data with the aim of understanding concepts, experiences, and generating novel ideas for research. The topic for my PICOT project is the impact of hand hygiene among healthcare workers in reducing hospital associated infections.  The two qualitative research articles related to my PICOT project are ‘A Qualitative Case Study Exploring Hand-Hygiene Standards in an Intensive Care Unit by Augustine et al (2019) and Experiences of hand hygiene among acute care nurses by Chatfield et al (2016) Qualitative Research Designs Essay Example Discussion Paper .

Augustine et al (2019) utilized a qualitative case study research design which is an in-depth study of a research problem. It is used when a researcher wants to describe, compare, and evaluate several aspects of a research problem. A case study is preferred when a lot of detailed data on a research problem needs to be collected. Chatfield et al (2016) utilized phenomenology which is a research design used when describing and understanding a particular phenomenon within the context of individual’s lives and experiences. The method captures people’s lived experiences as a researcher selects people who have undergone the phenomenon under study. The number of study participants depend on the amount and quality of data given by each of them. A potential qualitative research study would be an exploration of delivery of dignified care by professional nurses. The qualitative research method I would use is ethnography. This method would be used because my research topic seeks a deeper understanding on the culture of nursing in a specific health facility and if it promotes dignified care to patients. The information gained from the research will be applicable in nursing practice as it will improve nursing care and delivery of dignified care (Squires & Dorsen, 2018).  Qualitative research is valuable since it adds into the science, knowledge, and practice of nursing by increasing understanding of patient’s experiences, allowing tailored intervention in patient treatment and care, and to improving care and quality of services Qualitative Research Designs Essay Example Discussion Paper .

Response

Thank you for your detailed post about qualitative research designs. The analysis of qualitative research designs may be difficult at times (Polit & Beck, 2017). This is due to a misalignment of the research area and methodology, a deficiency of methodological expertise, and a disregard for the philosophical foundations of qualitative approach. However, I like that you provide a clear value of qualitative research in nursing. It is true that qualitative research does contribute to nursing research, education, and practice by enhancing awareness of patient experiences, enabling customized interventions in patient care and treatment, and increasing care and service quality (Squires & Dorsen, 2018). I concur with your evaluation that this qualitative research by Chatfield et al., (2016) was conducted using a phenomenological design. The main point of phenomenology is to investigate and describe events as they are actively experienced, without relying on theories to explain them, and as free as possible from unquestioned assumptions and preconceptions. As such, the researcher should examine the phenomena being examined when analyzing a phenomenological study (Zahavi & Martiny, 2018)Qualitative Research Designs Essay Example Discussion Paper .
