PTSD Symptoms After EMDR Therapy Essay Example Paper

Excellent post! You have made really strong points regarding how you could use EMDR therapy in practice as a PMHNP. The post provides a clear definition of EMDR, which is a kind of psychotherapy that focuses on memory and aims to modify the way memories are stored in the brain, hence reducing symptoms. EMDR therapy is crucial to PHMNPs as it enables them to treat PTSD and trauma more effectively. It may also be helpful in the treatment of other mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, and panic disorders. I agree that EMDR therapy will be beneficial to your practice when working with the veteran population.

According to Rousseau et al. (2019), in military veterans, a rise in precuneus metabolism is linked to decreased PTSD symptoms after EMDR therapy. As such, our servicemen with mental health issues can lead normal and quality lives. As such, I may prefer to use EMDR therapy to accurately evaluate the extent to which traumatic events are a contributing cause and effectively treat the issue through memory processing, which may aid in physical and physiological recovery. I choose this approach versus using prescription drugs, which might have unpleasant side effects PTSD Symptoms After EMDR Therapy Essay Example Paper

PTSD Symptoms After EMDR Therapy Essay Example Paper

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy that focuses directly on the memory and is intended to change the way the memory is stored in the brain, which reduces symptoms. EMDR is a structured therapy that encourages the patient to briefly focus on the traumatic event while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation which reduces the vividness and emotion associated with the traumatic events (APA, 2017). The APA recommends EMDR as a clinical practice guideline for the treatment of PTSD and is one of the most effective types of treatment for PTSD (VA.gov, 2020). Therefore, this type of psychotherapy would be beneficial in my practice as a PMHNP since I plan to continue to work with our veteran population. According to Bailey (2016), EMDR is one of three Veteran’s Affairs/Department of Defense (VA/DoD) evidenced based practices for PTSD. This article describes the benefits that one PMHNP has provided active duty, service men and women in the USAF, in treating their PTSD. Many mental health providers offering services to military members do not desire to provide trauma treatment and the few that do might prefer one therapy form over another like Prolonged Exposure Therapy or Cognitive Processing Therapy (Bailey, 2016). Therefore, a PMHNP could very well benefit from training or certifications for this specific psychotherapy, especially if one will provide mental health care to our service men and women.
