NURS 6600 Practicum Experience Journal

You must submit a journal entry in each assigned week, even if you are not on-site that week. If you are not on-site for a week in which a journal entry is due, reflect on experiences from any of the previous weeks of this course. Journal entries are due in Weeks 3, 7, and 11.

Begin each journal entry on a new page. The template has a “new page” command inserted before each weekly label. Be sure to delete any blank pages that appear between the weekly entries. Note: This document will serve as a cumulative journal. For each submission, you will add to the document so it contains all of your journal entries. Students are to submit the journal in the template provided. This allows Faculty to view progress made across the duration of the practicum NURS 6600 Practicum Experience Journal Essay Discussion .

Guidelines for Journal Entries

  • Numerically list practicum objectives for each entry from those listed on page 1. Objectives can change based upon opportunities that may present in the practicum setting.
  • For each entry, follow the instructions in Blackboard to analyze a problem, situation, or issue you have observed at your practicum site.
  • Place the references for each week’s entry immediately after that week’s content. Remember to use APA Style when writing your journal entries and listing references NURS 6600 Practicum Experience Journal Essay Discussion .

Guidelines for the Time Log

  • Consistently document practicum hours in the Meditrek® system. It is recommended that you document hours after each day in the practicum setting. If you are having issues with the Meditrek® system, please contact the College of Nursing Field Experience Office at [email protected].

Please see the rubric for additional guidance on journal and time log expectations.

Journal Entry 1 (Week 3)

 Objective(s) – numerically list*

*Specifically list the objectives that you are working on for this time frame.

  1. To apply the theories, principles and concepts acquired in the coursework to address research, practice, society, health and human needs within the professional nursing environment

I have been lucky enough to work as a nurse for the last seven years. This has given me the requisite experience that I need to better understand this line of work. On the one hand, it has granted me the opportunity to work more with doctors in the frontline which means I have become more adept at physical assessment. According to the emergency medicine specialty is a very high sensitive job along with professionals from different fields is limited. The emergency department is one of the areas that has truly tested my personal skills in the last two years. This way, I have had the chance to interact directly with healthcare providers with a great deal of experience in given matters. It adds to the professional relationship that we have established at the workplace (Emerson, 2007). This way, I am able to learn more during my practicums. In the early days, I was a bit skeptical about the whole issue which made me develop a high level of anxiety.  With the increase of professional independence the use of a more experience nurse as a mentor in the emergency setting could help reduce moral distress and support younger nurses (Abdolmaleki, Lakdizaji, Ghahramanian, Allahbakhshian, & Behshid, 2019).  However, being in the field has given me enough practice to get out of my comfort zone and learn more NURS 6600 Practicum Experience Journal Essay Discussion .

Journal Entry 2 (Week 7)

Objective(s) – numerically list

  1. To synthesize a personal framework and philosophy for professional nursing practice, and implement nursing processes in an efficient and comprehensive manner in the care of individuals, groups and families.

The issue I found in my clinical site was that the nurse-to – patient ratio seemed to undermine the facility’s capacity to provide patient health care of quality. There was massive workload for the available nurses such that they hardly had any interpersonal relationships with the clients they were caring for, thereby contributing to the inability of the facility to meet the criteria recommended by the Ambulatory Healthcare Accreditation Association. It is clear from organizational clinical standards, closely related to the clinical priorities, that the need to deliver quality for patients ‘ health care is crucial. The scarcity of the available staff, however, will lead to insufficient healthcare being effectively used because patient needs will not be met promptly (Katsikitis et al., 2013)NURS 6600 Practicum Experience Journal Essay Discussion .

The American Nurses Association sets guidelines for the delivery quality patient care for workers and unsustainable workloads impair the capacity to provide healthcare. The nurse to bed balance is a connection that should be held in equilibrium for providing patients with quality healthcare services (Rogowski et al., 2013).).

The Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Healthcare was directed at improving patients ‘ conditions through the strategy of making patients the priority for healthcare. Conversely, this is affected by the access to healthcare professionals and hence quality healthcare is comparable to a reasonable nurse to bed ratio (Palese et al., 2013)NURS 6600 Practicum Experience Journal Essay Discussion .

The issue can be addressed accordingly by focusing on the wider use of digital technologies in order to improve the operation by currently small personnel. In order to resolve the gap in the provision of quality healthcare services the retrenchments of nurse schemes should be adjusted (Katsikitis et al., 2013).

Journal Entry 3 (Week 11)

Objective(s) – numerically list

*Specifically list the objectives that you are working on for this time frame.

Your second journal entry provides another opportunity for active reflection—consideration, engagement, and application. You may notice that the prompts repeat from your first journal. This is deliberate, designed to foster reflection and iteration. Your perspective, focused as it is on the practical experience found at a dynamic institution, may shift. Or, you may find evidence to support a concept or theory you have applied or intend to apply. To prepare: Reflect on your practicum experiences in Weeks 4–7. Think about the evidence, concepts, and/or theories learned throughout this program and your nurse executive specialization. Analyze a problem, issue, or situation that you have observed during your practicum experience. Using a minimum of three peer-reviewed sources of evidence, consider what you have observed within the context of your specialty using appropriate concepts, principles, and theories. Give special attention to observed events that vary from the scholarly literature. Including personal communications from leaders in healthcare administration is acceptable; however, this does not replace the requirement for three peer-reviewed sources of evidence. Determine the degree to which the problem, situation, or issue was addressed in a manner consistent with the theory, concepts, and principles detailed in the evidence. Given the various evidence-based approaches that can be used in addressing the observed problem, situation, or issue, think about a plan for approaching the matter differently. To complete Practicum Journal Entry 2: Open your saved Practicum Experience Journal, which should already include your Journal 1 entry. In the Journal 2 area of the document, write a 250- to 300-word entry in which you do the following: Document specific objective(s) for the specific time frame. Describe a problem, issue, or situation that you have observed during your practicum experience (no more than half a page). Using no fewer than three peer-reviewed sources of evidence, analyze what you have observed within the context of your specialty using appropriate concepts, principles, and theories. Give special attention to observed events that vary from scholarly literature. Explain the degree to which the problem, situation, or issue was addressed in a manner that is consistent with the theory, concepts, and principles detailed in the evidence. Given the various evidence-based approaches that can be used in addressing the problem, situation, or issue, formulate a plan for approaching the matter differently.
