Short Story Summary
Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” follows a man named Bailey, his wife, two children, traveling from Georgia to Florida on a family trip. His mother (“the grandmother”) doesn’t want to go, and mentions a criminal on the loose called The Misfit. As they depart, the grandmother secretly brings her cat. They stop at a restaurant to eat and chat up the owner, Red Sammy, and his wife. Red Sammy and the grandmother both talk about the world’s lack of “good men.” Afterward, the grandmother tells the kids of a plantation she’d visited nearby and convinces Bailey to drive there. During the ride, the grandmother realizes she’d mistaken the location, startling her and causing her cat to pounce onto Bailey, leading to an accident. Coincidentally, The Misfit and his friends arrive to “help.” The grandmother attempts to survive by evangelizing to him, all the while his friends kill off her family. The grandmother continues trying to prove he is a “good man” to avoid her death, and in the realization that she’d only been trying to save herself, he shoots her dead.
