Throughout reading all assigned reading materials, I believe plagiarism is an act of dishonesty and lack of studying. To put it another way, plagiarism would not be an obstacle while engaged in my studies at Unpeople if I would be honest enough not to pretend someone else’s works as my own or study enough to understand what plagiarism is. I suppose there is no excuse for not knowing plagiarism because tons of websites want to teach students how to avoid plagiarizing and our school’s catalog clearly shows that any forms of plagiarism will not be accepted.NASC 1001 Academic Integrity Paper
If I have to rank people on the case study from the most responsible to the least for Reggie’s failing grade, I would say Reggie, Arnie, Professor Love lit, and Sally.
The reason why I believe Reggie himself/herself is the most responsible in this case is that 1) Reggie did not even try studying and 2) did ignore the code of academic integrity. First, Reggie did not work hard to read assigned textbook but just get stressed while playing games instead. This kind of behavior is considered as irresponsible and failing at time management. Besides, all Reggie did was looking for something to copy online. On top of all that, Reggie took another person’s work as his/her own. Whether Reggie tried to revise the paper some more or not, the work is originated from someone else. And it is clearly considered as plagiarism according to the code of academic integrity.
The second most responsible person will be Arnie. As a fellow student, Arnie knew that Reggie was trying to plagiarize and turn in the paper as his/her own. It might be hard to tell a friend to stop doing something bad. But, I still think Arnie should have warned Reggie that plagiarism could lead Reggie to the failing grade on the course.NASC 1001 Academic Integrity Paper
It was hard to rank the last two people. Still, in my opinion, Sally at least warned Reggie as the academic support counselor. I mean Sally did his/her job, and I don’t know Professor Love lit have already taught his/her students enough that plagiarism is unacceptable because that is not stated in the case study. Thus, I would like to say Sally is the least responsible person for Reggie’s failing grade while Professor Love lit is the third most responsible person on the rank.
During reading Academic Integrity and Code of Conduct Statements on the school catalog, I suppose that the most important value as being a student is to have integrity and to be honest at any time.
In order to avoid any kind of plagiarism on my papers, I was concerned what strategies I must use. After a while, I bethought myself how to ensure not to plagiarize in three ways.
The importance of academic integrity Scholarly completeness is always a major concern for many universities around the world. Many people may ask such questions: What is academic integrity? It is regarded as an act of maintaining, avoiding, preventing, and giving disciplinary measures to honesty and appropriate actions in academic circumstances.
Academic integrity is important for several reasons. First of all, having academic honesty is that other people can trust you. People you interact with know to do things in good faith and to rely on you to do what you say. They will trust you when you know that you believe to do the right thing and that your actions are consistent with this belief. Second, having academic sincerity is important as it brings value to your degree. Employers are willing to hire graduates they believe that they are very personal and honest. They prefer to invest in the development of human capital that can have a positive impact on people and people who can trust to fulfill their mission.

Student academic integrity: Academic integrity is the foundation of the University of South Florida system emphasizing academic integrity and personal integrity in the university community. Honesty of academia is based on certain basic values including honesty, respect and fairness. Widely defined academic honesty is a requirement to complete all academic efforts and academic knowledge as representatives of their own efforts. Unless otherwise determined by an independent accreditation body, the final decision of the USF System Organization on infringement of scholarly sincerity and related academic sanctions affects the student’s academic status throughout the USF system and is applied I will.

Academic dishonesty can be defined as a key feature that degrades the full essence of learning. A habit covers the true image of a person in terms of academic achievement. Honesty is one of the aspects that have seriously been neglected in schools, colleges and universities today. The educational sector has ignored the value of honesty as far as student training, education, and learning are concerned. Unfortunately, dishonesty is gradually becoming inevitable, as excellent grades are paramount in learning institutions (Spaulding, 2009). Presently, it is a matter of concern that dishonesty in educational institutions is not reduced, but rather on the increase, since both students and teachers contribute to its development remarkably (Nazir & Aslam, 2010). However, academic integrity is not only an essential part, but also a measure of excellence in education.
Dishonesty plays a key role in breaking the society today. It is common knowledge that ‘a long journey begins with one step’. It can be applied to dishonesty, which may be considered as one of the habits that grow gradually. It only starts with one mischievous thought. However, it is crucial to realize that honesty defines a personality. It reflects on the character that one has in any given gathering or community. For instance, a person, which is known to be dishonest, cannot be appointed or given any key responsibility in a group. In the same way, it applies to an academic surrounding. Thus, academic dishonesty becomes a root of other misgivings that gradually grow and end up changing one into an irresponsible person. Dishonesty is a habit that can blur someone to attaining his or her set goals in education. When one is learning, it is a key responsibility of this individual to do his or her best in order to
attain the desired goals. Dishonesty and the lack of integrity only paint a fake image of this person’s capability. As a result, dishonest people live their educational lives lying to others. The public image is seen to be perfect and excellent, yet the real self cannot perform to get the expected mark. Such people end up losing their ambitions, as they cannot execute their duties in the corporate world, where there is no room for such vices. In the end, dishonest people crumble down in regrets and failures. In this context, it is fundamental for teachers in learning institutions to give their best training to bring up reliable and honest people in the society.
Stealing has been closely associated with dishonesty in the past. These two vices go hand in hand and contribute remarkably to changing a person’s habit. For instance, plagiarism is one of the most common features of dishonesty. Students often copy each other’s works or assignments. To some extent, students go ahead to have outsiders take exams in absentia (at a certain fee for the one doing an exam). Once a person has cheated in an exam, the seed of dishonesty begins to take root. In the end, such a person loses his or her conscious and may not realize the extent of this misconduct. However, the effect of having such a vice comes up, when one is caught or fails to succeed as expected. It leads to a high sense of guilt. At this point, dishonesty is not a problem, but a resulting condition. Guilt can lead to other self-destructive thoughts that may destroy a student. It is beneficial to realize that the results of having dishonest students can cost the reputation of an institution. Dishonesty contributes significantly to building or spoiling the name of a school. It means that an institution known to encourage dishonesty may have graduates that are disregarded in the society. These trends are observed especially in high school and college examinations. Students are not monitored well to practice integrity. Similarly, those studying at
from such institutions become victims of their own circumstances and lead a failing life before the public. Additionally, it is worthwhile noting that dishonest students portray the same bad habit, even in their homes (Caruana, Ramaseshan, & Ewing, 2000).
The importance and impact of honesty cannot be overlooked among students today. It forms the corner stone of stable and steadfast people that will lead the society tomorrow. Now, it is important for every person in learning institutions to contribute to developing a student community that highly regards honesty. Thus, maintaining academic honesty may call for extra efforts from both senior and junior teachers. However, it is appropriate to realize the contribution of students to building an honest academic environment (McCabe & Trevino, 1993).
In conclusion, dishonesty is a vice that affects student’s education and academic excellence. It also influences a personality, which is fundamental in everyday life. Dishonesty has destroyed many people and has damaged the reputation of many academic institutions. People have lost their integrity due to habits that have begun with dishonesty in schools. Students have also languished, while others remain victims of dishonesty on the part of their friends and peers. Despite its ever-growing level, it can be reduced and at last eliminated from all academic institutions. However, this will call for extra efforts from teachers, non-teaching staff and student bodies at large.
Lately, academic honesty has become a major issue among the elite in the academic environments. It can no longer be simply defined as the carrying of illegal materials into the exam rooms or copying someone else’s work. Academic honesty involves the students submitting work that is originally theirs and inclusion of the cited sources in their work. The academic community is generally aware that it is not possible for students to come up with their own original work and therefore, allow inclusion of other people’s work in form of direct quotes of paraphrases only if the original author is appropriately acknowledged. Academic honesty takes different forms and addresses in various aspects in schools and colleges.
Academic Honesty
Academic honesty is considered important because the results obtained from schools or colleges are referred to in future. Future employers refer to these documents when assessing the abilities and gifts of the students before actual employment.
Therefore, high levels of integrity should be adhered to in order to ensure quality reports and accurate assessment of the student’s abilities and potential (Vegh, 2009). Students commit academic dishonesty when they engage in activities that are classified in four general types; namely, cheating, dishonest conduct, plagiarism and collusion.
Cheating
Cheating is the most ancient form of academic dishonesty known in history. It takes different forms whereby the rules and regulations governing formal or informal examinations are violated. For instance, copying other people’s work during examination, sharing one’s answers with another during examinations, or submission of other people’s work, as one’s own original work.
During examinations, invigilators are placed strategically in the exam room to monitor the behavior of students but some students attempt to share answers (Vegh, 2009). A student is not allowed to communicate to their fellow students in an exam room without the express permission of the invigilator and a violation of these rule amounts to cheating. Dishonest Conduct
Unfair advantage could also be meted on students when they commit dishonest conducts like stealing examination or answer keys from the instructor. Desperate times call for desperate measures and students are capable of doing anything to rescue their dreams of scooping first class honors.
Such cases have been reported severally and they can be classified as dishonest conduct (“What is Academic Dishonesty”, 1996, p.77). Further, students who try to change official academic results without following the procedures laid by the respective academic institutions commit dishonest conducts. Obtaining answers before the actual exam or altering records after certification leads to low academic standards.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the recent form of violating academic honesty and defined as intellectual theft. The crime comes in when one makes use of another person’s findings, as if his/hers, without giving the due credit to the source. Plagiarism takes the form of stealing other people’s ideas or words and the form of use of other people’s work without crediting the source properly.
The sources mentioned here include articles from electronic journals, newspaper articles, published books, and even websites (Bouchard, 2010). The internet has become a source of information for research and the easy accessibility and convenience of the same provides a temptation to the students to copy and paste other people’s work.NASC 1001 Academic Integrity Paper
However, it amounts to plagiarism and is classified as a violation of academic honesty. Though plagiarism can be either intentional or unintentional on the part of the student, it still amounts to academic dishonesty either way. Students should therefore be careful to ensure that their work is free of any form of plagiarism.
Preventing Academic dishonesty
Academic institutions have come up with measures to curb the spread of academic dishonesty to maintain the credibility of their programs. Academic dishonesty leads to production of half-baked graduates who lower the standards of education hence that of the university (Staats, Hupp, & Hagley, 2008, p.360).
Students who commit academic dishonesty do not think on their own hence they do not develop the art of thinking which is critical for quality education. Ensuring enough spacing between students in the exam rooms and adhering to silence during exams reduces the rate of cheating in institutions. Instructors should also participate fully in ensuring that the work presented by students meets the set standards in respective academic institutions.
Instructors should be able to call the students and ask them questions regarding their submitted work to ensure that they wrote the work themselves. Technological developments also assist in fighting these vices in institutions. Software development in the computer science field has developed software able to detect plagiarism. This software, known as anti-plagiarism software, runs scans through the internet by comparing the submitted articles with various databases in the internet.NASC 1001 Academic Integrity Paper
The sentences are compared and any of them found matching in a particular percentage is classified as plagiarism. Academic institutions use this software to ensure that students do not copy directly and they appropriately acknowledge their sources (Celik, 2009, p.275). In some institutions, violation of anti-plagiarism or academic honesty rules in general amount to punishment of different forms that in worst-case result to expulsion from these academic institutions.
Conclusion
The forms of academic dishonesty and methods of prevention discussed above are only general descriptions. However, they can be discussed further into way that is more specific and forms that would help improve the standards of education in academic institutions through policy research by the concerned institutions.
