Some of these experiences affect their lives for a long time after leaving the service, making it difficult to fit in civilian life. While many mental health issues are evident, the most common problem is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that affects the veterans (Cook et al., 2016)Health Determinants Discussion Paper.

The families report that the veterans have changed and no longer seem interested in life. Such problems affect reintegration into society, but strategic community outreach programs can address them. Description of Problem PTSD is reported in about one in five veterans in the United States. Despite the apparent symptoms, most veterans are unwilling to seek mental health services to help cope with the effects. Assault, disasters, and military combat can cause increased anxiety in the veterans, experienced through recurring thoughts and nightmares (Cook et al., 2016). Any situation that triggers these memories causes the individual to be violent or anxious, affecting their lives. Research reveals that most veterans with PTSD are more likely to be involved in intimate partner violence, substance and drug abuse, and remain hyper-aroused (Duan-Porter et al., 2018)Health Determinants Discussion Paper
