Patient-Centered Nursing Framework Essay
The profession of a nurse is one of the most important professions in the current world. With the right education, skills and the various practice, a nurse’s care can be a crucial part of the human’s life. Among different nursing frameworks, one has stood up lately – Patient-centered care. “Patient-centered care in healthcare is defined as care provision that is consistent with the values, needs, and desires of patients and is achieved when clinicians involve patients in healthcare discussions and decisions.” (Constand et al., 2014) Patient-Centered Nursing Framework Essay
With the quite self-explanatory name, Patient-centered Nursing aims to incorporate the patient in the process of the care in full. “Rather than viewing a patient as a passive component of the medical process, PCC adopts a contractual view of health care under which a patient is viewed an active participant who should be involved in any decision-making processes.” (Delaney, 2017) With the patient’s understanding of the illness and the care-plan, it will be more comfortable for both the nurse and patient to make the treatment process the most efficient. Greene et al. (2012) share an opinion that in the Patient-centered care, the individual’s needs are valued, and the personal preferences are respected to the full extent.Patient-Centered Nursing Framework Essay
What is more, Patient-centered care has been proved to be beneficial for the patient’s health. “Patient-centered care results in improved care processes and health outcomes, including survival. Two systematic reviews identified promising patient-centered interventions directed at patients, clinicians, or both, which resulted in improved communication and health outcomes.” (Greene et al., 2012) Moreover, Fix et al. (2018) state that “During the 20th century, PCC became a focus of healthcare systems with its promise to increase patient satisfaction and improve outcomes” and that the Patient-centered care has lead to the “improvements in a variety of health conditions, increased adherence, decreased healthcare utilization, better ratings of care and improved quality of care.”
Besides the benefits for the patients and their health, Patient-centered nursing as the significant value for the nurses, and the outside world. It has been mentioned that with the patient’s involvement in the process of the treatment, the nurses can better understand the patients’ view on the problem to provide the needed care. In the research, Constand et al. (2014), have identified that “in a population of patients receiving physiotherapy for the treatment of chronic low back pain, the provision of patient-centered care helped the physiotherapists to “better understand and manage” their patient’s needs.” What is more, they have “identified that an improved understanding of patient needs stems from clinicians acknowledging patient perspectives on recovery.” (Constand et al., 2014) Greene et al. (2012) share the similar opinion that the Patient-centered care is important for all of the parties involved and state that “clinicians and their teams may benefit from a patient-centered orientation by knowing that they have more effectively addressed the needs of their patients.” With the Patient-centered care, the benefit can also be seen from the legal side. As Greene and colleagues (2012) mention in the research, “There is a business case for patient-centered care, on the basis of evidence that patients who report stronger relationships with their clinicians undergo fewer tests and are less inclined to pursue legal action if a medical error is handled in a sensitive, patient-centered fashion.”Patient-Centered Nursing Framework Essay
While the practice concepts have been introduced, it is also worth to mention that Patient-centered care is an efficient theoretical framework. Despite being a relatively new framework, this model has the potential to take over other frameworks, such as paternalism, and others. Van der Cingel et al. (2016) argue that “Besides being a framework that offers building blocks for the realization of good care, the framework is interwoven with a strategy known as transformational practice development and research methodologies that originate from the action research paradigm (McCormack and McCance, 2016). The framework, therefore, is particularly suitable for empirical studies that aim to develop practical knowledge on the realization of person-centered care.” It is crucial that the practice has a theoretical background, due to the nursing being a profession that is directly connected to the patient. Thus, the care that is Patient-centered has to let the nurses learn to choose the beat approach to provide the quality care.
Patient-centered Nursing Framework has been argued to be suitable for various nursing spheres. Greene et al. (2012) think that Patient-centered care “should be an imperative for all health care systems, whether that “system” is a solo practitioner, a large multispecialty group practice, or a federally qualified health center providing care to underserved populations.” The laws that are being provided have shown to be also beneficial for the Advanced Practice Nurses. “Despite the varying terminology for care innovation, the healthcare/medical home models strongly promote patient-professional partnerships, shared decision making with children and families, and quality improvement in the new health care delivery models.” (Lindeke et al., 2010)Patient-Centered Nursing Framework Essay
Patient-Centered Nursing is a new, yet extremely important framework in the nursing practice. It has been proved by various scholars to be beneficial not only for the patients, who are the main focus in this framework, but also for the nurses, and healthcare in general.
What is more, it has been found out by Constand et al. (2014) that “a broadly applicable framework/model of patient-centered care is feasible and together with appropriate operational definitions might advance future empirical studies addressing whether patient-centered care improves outcomes.” In addition, the framework of the patient-centered care can also be applied by the Advanced Practice Nurses. With all of the decisive factors of the Patient-centered care, this framework is essential and has to be thoroughly developed.Patient-Centered Nursing Framework Essay
