The image of the nurse is a global concern, in view of the scientific production about theme found in the literature, indicating that for decades the subject is relevant and deserves the attention of professionals. Recent articles have been produced in Australia, China and Egypt, showing that the topic has relevance to study nursing (Fullerton et.al, 1995).

The image society has of nurse is pervaded by stereotypes that include figures like saints, prostitutes, witches, heroes and relate to the function of assisting the physician and the lack of social life. Furthermore, the image that nurses have of themselves and their work is negative, causing frustration for the lack of autonomy found in professional reality. For a better understanding of this issue, we carried out a literature review, we aimed to characterize and analyze the image of the nurse. It is little scientific literature on the subject in the country.
