St Vincents & Mater Health Sydney (SV&MHS) is the NSW based arm of St Vincent’s Health Australia which, together with its partners, is the largest diversified healthcare organization within Australia’s not-for-profit and Catholic healthcare sectors. The organization has more than 6,000 employees working in health and aged care, management and support services. The organization is governed by the St Vincent’s Health Australia board of Directors with overarching governance by the Trustees of Mary Aikenhead Ministries. In this paper, the author will critically analyze the type of organizational structure that has been adopted and how it relates to the vision, mission and goals of the organization. The advantages and limitations of the identified structure for health care delivery will also be discussed. The author will also evaluate the utility of the organizational structure in relation to the achievement of the organization’s mission and goals. As a part of this analysis, the key lines of authority and responsibility will also be identified for achieving organizational goals/objectives. St Vincent’s Health System has emphasized consistently over promotion and prevention of healthcare across Australia. The management of St Vincent’s Health System has also considered leadership as an integral component in achieving healthcare objectives. Apart from these strategies, St Vincent’s Health’s business model also includes the effective use of HIT i.e. Health Information technology, integrated care management and care coordination, and effective development of relationships related to healthcare. The management at St Vincent’s Health’s strongly relies on transparency and trust in healthcare partnerships, apart from these strategies the MHC’s business model also include capitation of risk through extensive experience. Several features has contributed towards the implementation of business strategies including a strong payer-provider relationship a focus on performance measurement and reporting, an expanding HIT infrastructure, and ongoing progress toward building a culture of communication and collaboration within its integrated delivery system (Sullivan, 2010, pp. 130-149).
The other important features of St Vincent’s Health System strategies and business models includes strong local governance; development of a management services organization that will provide the tools and resources to manage population health, improve care, and reduce costs; institutional commitment to the ACO initiative; and St Vincent’s Health System’s historical presence as a community-based organization.
