Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a psychiatric treatment method that is used to change destructive thought patterns that cause negative emotions and behaviors. CBT is a short-term treatment modality where a psychiatrist or a psychologist sets goals with the client where they apply a practical approach to achieve the objectives (David, Cristea & Hofmann, 2018). The form of therapy is used to manage a wide range of psychiatric conditions including anxiety, depression, insomnia, drug and alcohol abuse, and relationship problems. This essay compares and contrasts CBT with other behavior therapies (BT) used in mental health treatment.

Similarities Between Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Rational Emotive Behavioral therapy

Rational emotive behavioral therapy (REBT) is a treatment modality why the therapist helps the client identify negative thought patterns and irrational beliefs that cause inappropriate emotions or behaviors (David et al., 2018). Both CBT and REBT apply a goal-oriented approach where the therapist and the client develop objectives together. For instance, the goal will have an extra hour of sleep for a person suffering from insomnia. In both therapies, the therapist provides the client with an alternative to the best options to achieve the goals. Both therapies focus on helping the client identify negative thoughts contributing to their behaviors. For instance, they will help the client identify characteristics that make it difficult for him/her to develop successful relationships with people around them. After identification, they formulate strategies to overcome the factors identified to facilitate successful relationships. The BTs are similar since they both rely on the patient’s insight on the negative thoughts that contribute to the current situation. For instance, there has to be a reason that the client believes that contributes to alcoholism or anxiety (APA, 2013). Differences Between Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy

Both CBT and REBT have numerous similarities there are still differences that make them different approaches. In REBT both parties explore the client philosophic attributes that influence their emotions. In REBT clints philosophy forms the basis of cognitive distortions or emotional distress. When the therapist identifies the philosophies, he/she provides ideas that would facilitate healing (Wheeler, 2014). The insight of contributing philosophies is not applied in CBT. Even though both therapies work towards self, CBT focus on boosting self-esteem while REBT aims at achieving self-acceptance. Therefore, CBT provides the clients with ways to improve themselves to achieve that esteem. On the other hand, REBT helps the client focus on the positive perspective of what they have instead of modification. REBT therapy focuses on secondary disturbance contributing to the negative emotions while CBT aims at recognizing thought patterns.

Preferred Version of Cognitive Behavior Therapy  

REBT is an effective treatment modality compared to other cognitive therapies applied when managing mental health patients. It’s advantageous since it does not demand changes but rather self-acceptance through focusing on a positive perspective. REBT is also effective since it focuses on both the philosophy and the secondary disturbance that contributes to undesired behaviors (David et al., 2018). Conclusion

CBT is a treatment method applied in patients having mental conditions ranging from insomnia to depression. The method is applied by a systematic approach where the care provider and the client develop achievable goals together. REBT is also a therapy similar to CBT since both have goals and require patient’s insight. However, REBT goes deeper into finding out the root problem before finding ways to resolve it.
