Portfolio
I have always been fascinated by the idea of being a nurse and providing care to others. Pursuing a nursing career ensures that I have the professional knowledge and qualifications to practice as a nurse. From early on, I knew that I would pursue a nursing career. However, I was unsure about the area of nursing in which to specialize. Initially, I began my nursing career as a certified nurse. Through working in different nursing positions and undertaking a myriad professional roles and responsibilities, I realized that I had a strong interest in psychiatry and opted to specialize in psychiatric nursing. As a result, I enrolled in a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) education program. I anticipate that with the qualifications from the successful completion of the PMHNP program, I will have the opportunity to practice as a PMHNP even as I become more involved in psychiatric nursing care provision and research, participate in advocacy efforts, and take on specialized professional responsibilities Cover Letter and Portfolio Discussion Paper.
Eventually, my goal in pursuing a professional nursing career as a PMHNP is not only to provide psychiatric nursing services to patients, but also to be more involved in policy development through presenting evidence, education efforts and advocacy. In my current capacity, I am limited to applying policies developed by others and being minimally involved in policy making. I perceive this as a significant concern since many of those involved in making policies that affect nurses do not have a professional nursing background thus resulting in flawed policies that have significant shortcomings in application. Rather than continuing to maintain this status quo that results in adequate policies, I feel that I can proactively reverse the situation by leveraging advanced nursing knowledge and experience to lead efforts in presenting better policies.
Objective
To ensure that psychiatric nursing services are effective in achieving the desired health care outcomes. This will be possible if I work in a position where my nursing knowledge and skills, coupled with excellent interpersonal, management, analytical and creative skills, as well as inquisitive mind, attention to detail and loving, compassionate care, are leveraged to bring new energy into the concept of nursing that includes nursing practice, research, education and advocacy Cover Letter and Portfolio Discussion Paper
