Evidence Based Practice Essay

Introduction

Skela-Savič et al (2020) defines evidence-based practice (EBP) as utilizing the most recent peer reviewed evidence-based resources, clinical expertise, and patient preferences to make clinical decisions. When applied in clinical practice, evidence-based practice results in improved patient outcomes.

Importance of Evidence-Based Practice

Evidence-based practice enables the practicing nurse to make good decisions through well-found scientific research. It provides the most effective care available hence improving the patient’s prognosis, (Mackey& Bassendowski, S. 2017). It has improved the attitude of all health care workers by giving room for consultations to find out the reason for certain practices. There is a better understanding of the effectiveness of diagnostic tests and management. It has led to the use of current medical protocols and maximum utilization of relevant resources during practice.Evidence Based Practice Essay

For instance, in the author’s healthcare organization, there is a neonatal intensive care unit program that purposes to decrease the length of hospital stay for premature infants and improve the mental health outcomes of parents. This is an evidence-based practice that has shown a good prognosis to both infants and parents. As supported by Soll & Mc Guire (2019), nurses promoting this program through continuous education and follow-up have noted significant improvements in healthcare delivery and outcomes with regards to infant growth and development and hence improving their QoL. Similarly, the practice has improved the mental health of parents by reducing postpartum depression that comes with raising premature infants.
