Two Definitions of Health and Illness

Ina literal sense, the term health indicates the overall well being of the human body, in relation to the mental, physical, as well as social aspects. The connotation attached to health primarily does not only mean the essentiality of absence of any ailment or illness; it goes far beyond its absence, which primarily includes the impression of physical and psychological well being. Moreover, health is believed to be not only being the purpose of living, but an imperative asset for sound functionality of human body on daily basis, and for everyday objectives.

On the other hand, illness denotes the dwindling health, as a result of a particular disease or aliment of either the mind or the body. Illness can be deemed to be a total opposite of what health denotes. Illness means the absence of firmness in the sound being or the well being of the physical or mental state of a human body. Illness refers not only to any physical or physiological impairment, but also the grave cognitive or mental issues.Health Psychology Research Paper

Bio-Psychosocial Model of Health

The Bio-psychosocial model of health openly rejects the affiliation of the connotation of merely the biological factors to the health or illness. The model eloquently articulates that the sound functionality of a human body results in the amalgamation of social, psychological, as well as biological factors, in reference to either the illness or the health. What enables a cognitive mind to comprehend the notion of health in a better assimilated manner is the appropriate assembly of the social factors psychological, and biological aspects of the human body, rather than just the evaluation of the biological expressions.

Interestingly, this model directly contradicts the approach assumed by the conventional reductionist biomedical model, which articulates the fact that, it is rather possible to elucidate the course or development of every disease, with respect to a minor or major divergence or deviation from the usual sound functions of human body. This concept is widely acknowledged and employed in the respective arena of medicine, sociology, psychology, nursing and much more (LEONARDI, 2010, pp. S1). Health Psychology Research Paper
