Healthcare Information Technology Trends Discussion Paper

Brief description of general healthcare technology trends, particularly related to data/information you have observed in use in your healthcare organization or nursing practice.

A general healthcare technology trend observed in nursing practice is information and communication technologies being leveraged in delivering telenursing services. Covid-19 pandemic caused a significant change in the health care landscape as social distancing was encouraged even as the general public was discouraged from visiting medical facilities unless absolutely necessary. Towards this end, the organization leveraged the use of information technologies in providing nursing services with a view to facilitating the delivery of nursing services without placing the nurses or patients at risk of contracting Covid-19 Healthcare Information Technology Trends Discussion Paper.

Describe any potential challenges or risks that may be inherent in the technologies associated with these trends you described. Describe at least one potential benefit and one potential risk associated with data safety, legislation, and patient care for the technologies you described.

A significant risk inherent in the technologies associated with telenursing is information security. The technologies used focus on facilitating communication and information exchange. However, some of that information is protected health information as identified in HIPAA privacy rules. This means that the information is subject to federal protections even as patients are allowed to access the information (Gogia, 2019).

A potential benefit of telenursing is that it extends access to nursing care and allows nurses to provide higher quality nursing care. Through telenursing, nurses can provide multidisciplinary, family support, pain management, remote data collection, remote intervention, follow-up, education, and monitoring (Gogia, 2019)Healthcare Information Technology Trends Discussion Paper.

Explain which healthcare technology trends you believe are most promising for impacting healthcare technology in nursing practice and explain why.

Telehealth trends are the most promising for impacting healthcare technology in nursing practice. There have been significant advances in communication technologies, especially in the face of 5G deployment for public use. With 5G capabilities, nurses have a larger bandwidth to work with, this means that more complex health services can be remotely delivered with virtually no delays. In essence, it will allow nursing care delivery to occur remotely just as it would in person (Fong, B., Fong, A., & Li, 2020)Healthcare Information Technology Trends Discussion Paper.

Describe whether this promise will contribute to improvements in patient care outcomes, efficiencies, or data management.

This promise of remote care delivery contributes to improvements in patient care outcome, efficiencies and data management. First, it improves patient care outcomes and efficiencies as nurses and other medical personnel would be more readily available without having to make in person visits. This means that patients will be monitored in real time and care provided as required. Second, it improves data management as it will allow for more data to be collected to better understand the patient situation and care outcomes (Fong, B., Fong, A., & Li, 2020)Healthcare Information Technology Trends Discussion Paper.

Throughout history, technological advancements have appeared for one purpose before finding applications elsewhere that lead to spikes in its usage and development. The internet, for example, was originally developed to share research before becoming a staple of work and entertainment. But technology—new and repurposed—will undoubtedly continue to be a driver of healthcare information. Informaticists often stay tuned to trends to monitor what the next new technology will be or how the next new idea for applying existing technology can benefit outcomes. In this Discussion, you will reflect on your healthcare organization’s use of technology and offer a technology trend you observe in your environment. To Prepare: Reflect on the Resources related to digital information tools and technologies. Consider your healthcare organization’s use of healthcare technologies to manage and distribute information. Reflect on current and potential future trends, such as use of social media and mobile applications/telehealth, Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled asset tracking, or expert systems/artificial intelligence, and how they may impact nursing practice and healthcare delivery. By Day 3 of Week 6 Post a brief description of general healthcare technology trends, particularly related to data/information you have observed in use in your healthcare organization or nursing practice. Describe any potential challenges or risks that may be inherent in the technologies associated with these trends you described. Then, describe at least one potential benefit and one potential risk associated with data safety, legislation, and patient care for the technologies you described. Next, explain which healthcare technology trends you believe are most promising for impacting healthcare technology in nursing practice and explain why. Describe whether this promise will contribute to improvements in patient care outcomes, efficiencies, or data management. Be specific and provide examples.
