Implementation Of the IOM Future of Nursing Report Essay Paper

Part 1

Between 2008 and 2010, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee initiative on the Future of Nursing and the Institute of Medicine conducted a research activity that led to the presentation of the IOM report. The research sought to determine the specific issues that barred nursing personnel from actively being involved in comprehensive medical care changes in the USA. The committee’s formation was informed by the need to identify strategies for improving nurses’ involvement in health care decisions in terms of improving their efficiency and effectiveness as a profession. The committee’s results were presented in 2010 through the report (Institute of Medicine, 2018)Implementation Of the IOM Future of Nursing Report Essay Paper.

The report presented the committee’s findings in which it was noted that there was a need to implement changes in nursing education. It noted that the roles and responsibilities assigned to nursing personnel did not use their full complement of skills, knowledge and experiences since employment is typically based on what is available and not tailor-made opportunities. To address this concern, the committee recommendation that nursing education should be matched with job opportunities so that students do not acquire skills, knowledge and experiences that will not be useful to them in the workplace (Hunt, 2014)Implementation Of the IOM Future of Nursing Report Essay Paper.

The committee also mentioned that nursing curriculum and education is not standardized across the USA. It had issue with the fact that although the nursing education programs are approved across the country, they are simply complementary. This means that students would find it difficult to transfer between institutions for the same program. For example, a students attending an undergraduate nursing program in Alaska would find it difficult to transfer to an institution in Florida and continue with the same program. Given this awareness, the committee recommended that nursing curriculum should be standardized across the whole country so that students would find it easier to transfer their academic credits even as they changed institutions within the country, thus allowing them to continue with their education programs (Institute of Medicine, 2018). In this respect, committee denoted the importance of nursing education, particularly the need to match it with job opportunities and standardization of nursing curricula Implementation Of the IOM Future of Nursing Report Essay Paper.

Part 2

The IOM report made recommendations for changes to nursing practice, education and workforce development. Firstly, it made recommendations for changes to nursing practice through mentioning that nursing personnel should be involved at all levels of decision-making concerning patient-care. It noted that nurses are typically ignored despite being primary health caregivers so that whatever issues that may have noted are not raised or addressed. Given this awareness, the report mentions that nursing personnel should be involved at all levels of decision-making so that they are actively engaged in making contributions. This would give the nursing personnel more authority in providing medical care (Hansen-Turton, Sherman & King, 2015)Implementation Of the IOM Future of Nursing Report Essay Paper.

Secondly, it made recommendations for nursing education and workforce development. This has occurred through encouraging nursing personnel to improve their education levels and allowing them to become more knowledgeable. This is intended to offer them greater capacity to compete with other health care professions. Also, it would allow them to become more valuable and relevant when making care decisions. Besides that, it would enable them to make greater research contributions by collecting tangible evidence that supports their proposed practice changes (Institute of Medicine, 2018)Implementation Of the IOM Future of Nursing Report Essay Paper.

Finally, it noted that there is a disconnect between what is collected and relayed within data management systems. The result is that decisions are not supported by the right data. As such, it called for workforce development with greater focus on workforce development to support care decisions (Hansen-Turton, Sherman & King, 2015). As a result, the IOM report made recommendations to improve nursing practice, education and workforce development.

Part 3

State-based action coalitions are bodies that are led by nursing personnel and their business partners with the intention of driving change through local initiatives to transform how nursing approaches health care. In fact, these bodies help to advance the recommendations presented in the IOM report to improve medical care for everyone in the USA while strengthening nursing workforce and leadership (Tomlinson, 2011)Implementation Of the IOM Future of Nursing Report Essay Paper.

Maryland Action Coalition serves the function of transforming nursing care in Maryland State to support the IOM report. The coalition has spearheaded some initiatives towards this end. One initiative is the changes to South Carolina laws that increase access to nurse provided care. Through easing the public access to high-quality nursing care provided by advanced practice registered nurses, the coalition encourages nursing personnel to acquire more advanced education while enabling them to take on leadership roles and become more involved in making care decisions. Another initiative is the offering funding opportunities to fund nursing doctoral degrees through grants, fellowships and scholarships. Also, the coalition informs nursing personnel about what has been done and what is yet to be done to advance the goals of the IOM report. This occurs through summits that are attended by stakeholders (Campaign for Action, 2018). The three initiatives face funding challenges that significantly reduce the coalition’s capacity to bring about change. This challenge can be addressed by acquiring funding partners who would be informed about the need for the change (Hunt, 2014)Implementation Of the IOM Future of Nursing Report Essay Paper.
