Each year, chronic illnesses are responsible for the deaths of 41 million individuals, which is comparable to more than seven out of every ten fatalities globally (WHO, 2021). The incidence of the diseases is higher among those who are female, non-Hispanic white adults, persons aged 65 or older, and people who live in rural regions. It is estimated that around 21 percent of older people in India suffer from at least one chronic illness. In rural regions, 17 percent of old people suffer from a chronic ailment, whereas 29 percent of elderly people in metropolitan areas do (WHO, n.d). About 68 percent of all chronic illnesses may be attributed to hypertension and diabetes. The primary contributors to the prevalence of chronic illness in India are social transformation, urban sprawl, unfavorable environmental characteristics, and an unhealthy way of life. On the other hand, it is estimated that over 58 percent of Germans aged 65 and older are afflicted with at least one chronic illness, a number that is somewhat higher than that of other nations in the EU (Puth et al., 2017). Cardiovascular illnesses, as chronic diseases, are the primary cause of death in Germany, accounting for around 40 percent of the country’s overall mortality rate (Puth et al., 2017).
Global health concerns need participation from nurses in order to better inform and assist the general public in dealing with healthcare issues. Week 1: Issues and Trends in Public and Global Health
The United States has contributed vastly to globalization since World War II. Just as McDonald’s chains and Coca-Cola products have spread to such faraway places as Norway and South Africa, diseases like the plague, influenza, yellow fever, and measles have also spread. This is due to the movement of people, insects, birds, and animals.
Developing a global perspective on health care can save lives locally. Through continuing advances in medical technology, early detection of disease has resulted in lives being saved. However, presently, there is little fair distribution of accessible health care around the world, which hampers the timely efforts to prevent or contain disease. As governmental, nongovernmental, and faith-based organizations throughout the world continue to combat the spread of disease, they also attempt to improve quality of life and of health care for populations locally, nationally, and worldwide. In the 1960s, the World Bank developed the slogan “think globally and act locally” (Holtz, 2013, p. 3), and this notion acts as the overarching theme of this course.
This week, you will consider implications of global health and compare major public health issues in the United States with those in other nations.

Discussion: The Role of the Nurse in Global Health
In this week’s media presentation, Dr. Louise Fitzpatrick shared how health and disease are global issues. She pointed out that with the mobility of today’s population, health issues experienced in one area of the world are easily brought to other areas of the world through such means as travel and immigration. They can also be brought to a nation’s doorstep through the migration of animals, insects, and birds. Consider the spread of infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, avian flu, H1N1, or SARS. These diseases have quickly crossed oceans and spread to multiple countries. They are a public health concern in the United States as well as other countries.
To prepare for this Discussion:
- Reflect on Dr. Fitzpatricks’s comments in this week’s media presentation; specifically, on the role of the BSN nurse in public and global health.
- Select one health problem that you will use as a basis of comparison between countries.
- Identify one developed and one developing country.
- Compare and contrast the health problems and countries you selected with the United States in terms of World Health Organization (WHO) outcomes. In your analysis, be sure to include information about workforce availability to deal with the country’s disease burden.
