Learning from Experiences

My practicum has been outstanding, providing me with a wide range of clinical skills. Additionally, my preceptor has been a great help. During my first few weeks in patient care, I had the opportunity to engage with a variety of clients who were suffering from a variety of health concerns. However, three experiences in particular changed my perspective on nursing practice.

My first challenging patient interaction was with a patient who had been injured in a car crash. He suffered leg fractures and was bleeding profusely. The patient was in a frenzied state of mind. It was my first encounter with a patient who had been involved in a car crash, and I was taken aback by the amount of blood that was gushing out of his body. I became disoriented for a while and was unable to communicate with anybody until my preceptor intervened. It took some time for me to regain my composure, but I eventually ended up joining the staff in their efforts to stabilize the patient. The second challenging patient was in a coma due to alcohol consumption. As instructed by my preceptor, I was to care for the patient. I was overjoyed when I realized that I had successfully established an intravenous infusion for the first time. In addition, I made sure that the patient was properly positioned with their head up in order to maintain an unobstructed respiratory passageway (Strang, 2020).

Lastly, I had a fascinating encounter with an elderly lady in her 80s who had type 2 diabetes and COPD. A consent form had been completed by the patient, indicating that she would not get CPR if she were determined to be in an irrevocable and fatal state. Meanwhile, her daughter was opposed to her mother’s idea and desired that her mother’s life be spared regardless of the risk of an adverse event. During her stay in the facility, the patient had respiratory difficulties and eventually collapsed. It was necessary for me to confer with the preceptor. The workflow inside the emergency department was effectively handled thanks to meticulous record-keeping. A triage nurse was stationed at the entrance to help individuals prioritize their treatment and guide them where appropriate. Additionally, patients were stabilized and then moved to their hospital units for additional care to prevent overcrowding.

Communicating and Feedback

In the clinical context, knowledge and skills are critical, and it is always encouraged to strive for continual progress. Being a lifelong learner, I know that this was just the start of my experience, and there is still plenty to discover (Maaranen & Stenberg, 2017). I felt like I wasn’t being proactive enough, and as a result, I didn’t get much out of the experience. Whenever I needed him, my preceptor was constantly approachable.

It has been a pleasure working with my preceptor, who has been encouraging and helpful as I learn new skills in the clinical environment. His feedback has always been prompt and helpful. In the course of his practicum, he maintains a high level of precision, calmness, and gentleness in addressing any mistakes.
