Continuing my education will enable me to get the skills and knowledge necessary to be a competent leader and to work more effectively with nurses and doctors. Due to a lack of trust in my ability to seek management or permanent leadership capacities in the past, I eschewed these opportunities. I feel that I will be capable of establishing and enhancing my nursing principles and values while also gaining the self-confidence necessary to be a greater colleague, clinician, member of the care team, and prospective top-notch leader while at Walden.

Additionally, this education will provide me with the capacity to absorb what I have learned. The more I work on honing these abilities, the more proficient I will eventually become. With time, the skills I am learning through the material and tools available here at Walden, as well as my application of these abilities in the real world, will assist me in developing a unique leadership style for my career development. The knowledge gained will only be beneficial to the organization that I am now associated with, as well as to my colleagues Journal of Nursing Administration Essay Discussion Paper.

Week 4: Nurses in the Spotlight: Improving Health Care

These are both challenging and exciting times for the nursing profession! Nurses care for and interact with patients the most. These close nurse-patient interactions allow problems to be identified, investigated, and improved upon. Nurses lead research inquiry and perform a powerful role at all levels of decision making in the delivery of health care quality and safety. Thus, nurses are indispensable to improved health care Journal of Nursing Administration Essay Discussion Paper.

As a Registered Nurse, you are trained and proficient in caring for the physical well-being of patients. Just think about how much time and effort those skills took you to acquire! And you are still improving, correct? The National Academy of Medicine (NAM) Future of Nursing 2020-2030 has answered this question with a definitive yes. NAM has called upon the nursing profession to “design healthcare delivery systems that will prevent patient care errors and patient harm and promote continuous quality improvement.”

There are a variety of ways that nurses improve patient/staff outcomes and health care quality. Nurses are actively involved in evidence-based practice at the bedside, education, research, and quality data measurement daily.

As an example, Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTIs) are associated with longer lengths of stay, increased readmissions in hospitals, higher costs of care, patient discomfort, and even patient mortality (Centers for Disease Control [CDC], 2015). Nurses are successfully implementing evidence-based CAUTI reduction strategies with rates of CAUTI decreasing as much as 79% (Mundle, Howell-Belle, & Jeffs, 2020). Similar CAUTI efforts are being made in other patient care settings including long-term facilities and patients’ homes Journal of Nursing Administration Essay Discussion Paper.

Discussion: The Essence of Nursing

According to Hundt (2020), there is renewed attention on Florence Nightingale in the Year of the Nurse. Nightingale’s 19th century observations that natural light and a view of nature improve hospitalized patients’ recovery has been validated in randomized-controlled trials. Currently, there are interdisciplinary teams that include nurses and architects, that design optimal healing environments with a focus on patient-centered care.

Delivering the kind of care that Florence Nightingale practiced hinges on nurses fully utilizing their education and training and on their taking the lead to improve health care safety and quality and patient outcomes (National Academy of Medicine [NAM], 2020). Think about how you incorporate science into your everyday practice. Right now, for example, you may use your understanding of pharmacotherapy when safely administering medications. In the future, do you see yourself applying your research expertise by collecting or using clinical data to improve patient outcomes at your place of work or in the larger community?
