Strategies that can be used for leading change

As change agents, nurse managers and leaders should use appropriate strategies to lead change. The normative-reeducative and empirical-rational are two strategies that can be used for leading change. According to Murray (2017), the normative-reeducative strategy focuses upon the relationship needs of members of the staff, utilizes peer pressure, and relies on the desires of staff members to have satisfactory relationships. The normative -reeducative strategy increases stakeholder support and creates momentum for a change initiative to be successful when individuals who are resistant to change succumb to the pressure of their colleagues who are not opposed to change.  As indicated by Murray (2017) the normative-reeducative strategy is utilized when some resistance is anticipated, but nurse managers and leaders believe that staff members will succumb to peer pressure rather than be resistant to change.

The empirical-rational strategy presumes that members of the staff are basically self-interested and providing information and education will help staff in behavior change and adopting the innovation or change.  Generally, when change implementation is being performed, the initial step is to explain to the staff why the change is necessary.  The empirical-rational increase stakeholder support and create momentum for a change initiative to be successful by enabling staff to embrace change after they understand the benefits of change. As indicated by Murray (2017), when members of the staff comprehend the need for change and recognize that the change will benefit them personally, they will embrace it. I might want to consider including the most vocal critic of the change initiative in my guiding team so as to understand who the critic is opposed to change or how he/he feels threatened by change.  Effective change agents expect human responses to change and have strategies for managing the responses in the change plan. According to Nunnery (2019), a group’s or person’s resistance to change should be a main concern of the change agent. To handle resistance the change agent must evaluate what makes individuals resist change. Understanding the impact of the change initiative on a group or individual norms and planning for an alteration in attitudes can result in behavior change.
