NSG5000: Week 1 Discussion

This week you will describe how models may help APNs articulate professional role identify and function. Conceptual models will serve as a framework for organizing beliefs and knowledge about your professional roles and competencies and provide a basis for further development of knowledge. Question: Select one model and read the original source description. Address how well the model meets the following purposes: a. Helping to organize your beliefs and knowledge about advanced practice nursing b. Providing structure for research on advanced practice nursing c. Providing a coherent structure in which concepts important to advanced practice nursing are identified and related to one another d. Guiding curriculum development for advanced practice nursing e. Allowing practitioners to see the bigger picture so that they can provide holistic and comprehensive care NSG5000: Week 1 Discussion

The primary nursing model assigns the patients within a healthcare facility to a particular APN, who provides nursing care to the patient throughout their hospital admission (Wessel, Manthey & Manthey, 2015). The APN can follow the patient’s progress over time while offering them comfort, hence qualifying this nursing care as holistic level of care (Guzys, Brown, Halcomb & Whitehead, 2017). This nursing conceptual model is particularly effective for the patients with complex conditions, such as a diabetic patient with concomitant tissue damage.

This conceptual model would help me organize my beliefs and knowledge about advanced practice nursing because it would expose me to concepts such as disease progression, patient behavior, and components of nursing care that are most effective. The assignment to specific patients over extended periods would allow me to engage in research as an advanced practice nurse. For instance, the diabetic patient with tissue damage may act irrationally sometimes. This health outcome would provide me with a research question to conduct research and establish the cause of the irrational behavior in such a patient.

This conceptual model would also provide me with a coherent structure in which I identify concepts within the advanced practice nursing discourse that are related with each other. I strongly believe that I would achieve this outcome through conducting research. For instance, through research, I could discover that sometimes, patients with concomitant illnesses, especially where one of them is terminal, tend to develop mental health complications, and therefore, the APN should be well versed with psychological care of such patients to promote their wellbeing. To add to these purposes, the primary nursing model would help guide the curriculum development for advanced practice nursing, through results of research conducted. New research could introduce new linkages to nursing concepts or health conditions that warrant evaluation within the advanced nursing practice curriculum.

As mentioned earlier, this conceptual model entails assigning one nurse to a specific patient over a long period, to enable them provide holistic and specific care to the patient. Through interacting with the patients and providing them with nursing care, nurses develop the bigger picture in matters related to physical, mental, and spiritual health (McMurray & Clendon, 2015). For instance, when handling an advanced cancer patient, the nurse may develop deeper insights on importance of spiritual care for patients, and organize this for those with terminal illnesses, as a form of holistic care.
