NUR 550 Week 4 Responses Assignment

Research a health concern that impacts a population with which you are familiar. How do bio statistics affect the research focus? How do you define the population as your patient? Make sure to include the population and health concern. NUR 550 Week 4 Responses Assignment

Epidemiologic review of HIV infection

HV infection has been a serious health concern in most of the countries in the world since its epidemic in the 1980s. The infection caused a mass loss of lives before antiretroviral therapy was developed. Currently, the use of antiretroviral therapy is a common practice in all countries in the world. The disease is spread globally, with developing countries being mostly affected (NIDA. 2020)

General biostatistics and its significance

Globally, it is approximated that more than 100million people have been infected since the start, and currently, approximately 38 million people live with HIV/AIDS. Out of this population, approximately 26 million are on antiretroviral therapy. Annually, an estimated population of 2 million newly infected, and more than half a million people die due to AIDS-related illness (UNAIDS,2019)..  Such figures indicate that there is still a need to explore more in this field. The disease is among those top on the mortality rate due to opportunistic infections. A figure indicating an annual infection of 2 million still requires intervention because of such a number for the population’s health. Much has been done, hence the need for more research to define reasons for the high number of annual infections. NUR 550 Week 4 Responses Assignment

Defining a population

The most affected population include the LGBT, especially men who have sex with men. Other populations include adolescent groups, people who use injectable drug substances, commercial sex-workers, and low socioeconomic status. HIV infection is a health concern that has received various interventions since its epidemic affected (NIDA. 2020). Such interventions include distributing condoms in public facilities, health education incorporated in the curriculum, antiretroviral therapy, and public awareness. Such interventions have helped reduce the spread; however, the number is still high.
