NURS 6025 Patient Satisfaction Assignment

Patient satisfaction surveys are essential tools that nursing staff must reflect on and improve.  The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) help hospital compare itself to other hospitals so that they can better themselves.  Since some of Medicare reimbursement is based on patient satisfaction surveys (Carta, 2018), it is vital that the unit keeps their numbers at or above national benchmark patient satisfaction scores.NURS 6025 Patient Satisfaction Assignment

This unit has worked toward improving their patient satisfaction scores in regards to pain and has been successful according to the run chart.  Since May of 2015, the line graph has consecutively increased multiple times which according to Spath (2013), indicates that the upward trend will more than likely continue.  The results of this upward trend are from the unit quality improvement tools of training, education, and pain assessment tools.  There was effective education given on pain management on 4/1/14, a journal created for pain management on 8/2/14, and on 8/30/15 training on how to teach your patient about pain management.  These were all useful tools to keep the satisfaction scores increasing.  According to Well, Pasero,  and McCaffery (2008) education on pain management helps to prevent the under treating of pain, nurses being educated in evidence-based treatments and reviewing the pain management data of the unit, like this unit did on 1/15/2015 also helps to increase patient satisfaction scores in regards to pain.NURS 6025 Patient Satisfaction Assignment

I feel that this unit is on the right path and just needs to continually keep up with what they are doing.  In May of 2015 the QI team came together and formed a plan and then monthly until October 2015, the unit had some sort of in-service or education on pain, the run chart shows that the patient satisfaction surveys scores were going up, then they dropped in November of 2015 and started going up again once the unit was getting education again.  The QI team may want to suggest a continuation of training of in-service monthly so that the scores do not drop again.
