NURS – 6051 Transforming Nursing and Healthcare Technology

Introduction

Health information technology (HIT) includes a broad range of technologies for storing, sharing, and analyzing health information. Numerous studies have evaluated the link between the use of health technology and health outcomes, healthcare costs, and administrative efficiency. This paper will provide an annotated bibliography of four studies about how technology can transform nursing and healthcare.NURS – 6051 Transforming Nursing and Healthcare Technology

Moore, E. C., Tolley, C. L., Bates, D. W., & Slight, S. P. (2020). A systematic review of the impact of health information technology on nurses’ time. Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, 27(5), 798-807.

Moore et al (2020) conducted a systematic review to determine the impact of health information technology on the time of nurses. This study found out that health technology systems increase the nursing documentation time and reduce the time spent in medication administration. The findings from this study also indicated that information technology led to the distribution of nurse’s time and thus nurses were able to spend their time on more “value-adding” activities, for example, direct care, patient education, and communicating with other healthcare providers and patient families (Moore et al., 2020). The findings of the study also indicate that information technology in healthcare improves efficiencies in the healthcare system by enabling nurses to attend numerous nursing activities since health technology saves nurses’ time (Moore et al., 2020). Lessons learned from this study are that healthcare organizations should implement health information technologies because technologies in healthcare enable nurses to make the most of their valuable time and enable nurses to work more efficiently.

Rouleau, G., Gagnon, M. P., & Côté, J. (2015). Impacts of information and communication technologies on nursing care: an overview of systematic reviews (protocol). Systematic reviews, 4, 75.

Rouleau et al (2015) conducted a study to identify the best evidence about the impact of technology on nursing care. The findings of this study indicate that information technology can impact the work environment of nurses and thus impact nurses’ professional satisfaction, for instance, the quality of care as viewed by nurses (Rouleau et al., 2015). The study also indicates that various technologies in healthcare improve patient outcomes like patient safety, patient comfort, quality of life, patient experience, and patient status. These patient outcomes are nursing-sensitive outcomes because these outcomes are affected or influenced by nursing staff. For example, if technology improves the efficiency of healthcare services, communication between healthcare providers, and care coordination, this improves the quality of nursing care provided (Rouleau et al., 2015). As a result, this improves patient experience, patient satisfaction, and more importantly patient safety and healthcare outcomes. From this study, it is evident that healthcare organizations and nursing units need to implement different types of technologies in order to improve efficiency, care coordination, communication, and collaboration between healthcare providers, the quality of care, nursing care and thus ultimately improve patient outcomes.

Lavin et al (2015) conducted a study to identify the impact of health technology and particularly electronic health records (EHRs) in healthcare. The findings of this study indicated that technology in healthcare helps to simplify the workflow by helping to standardize and improve communication and collaborations during direct care. For example, technology helps nurses during assessment where nurses are provided with patient data in order to make specific clinical judgments such as patient diagnosis. Lavin et al (2015) et al also found that technology in healthcare improves efficiency. Efficiency in healthcare refers to avoiding waste in terms of time, supplies, equipment, and ideas. However, this study also found out that technologies such as EHR do not address deficiencies in the documentation process (Lavin et al., 2015). Therefore, it is important to involve nurses when implementing technologies in healthcare organizations. This will enable nurses to give their views about the IT implementation process, identify the possible challenges, and develop their informatics and documentation skills. It is also recommended to adequately train nurses after implementing information technologies in healthcare because nurses are the important users of technologies in healthcare (Lavin et al., 2015). Nurses can provide valuable recommendations to the technical personnel and vendors about what needs to be integrated into information technologies such as EHR.NURS – 6051 Transforming Nursing and Healthcare Technology

Kruse, C. S., & Beane, A. (2018). Health Information Technology Continues to Show Positive Effect on Medical Outcomes: Systematic Review. Journal of medical Internet research, 20(2), e41. https://doi.org/10.2196/jmir.8793.

Kruse & Beane (2018) conducted a systematic review to analyze the current evidence about the impact of health information technology on care outcomes. According to this study, the implementation of health information technology improves health outcomes by improving the efficiency of healthcare services. This is because technology in healthcare improve the quality of care, patient safety, and reimbursement process and thus facilitate value-based care (Kruse & Beane, 2018). Technology in healthcare leads to an increased focus on patient care due to the improved efficiency in care delivery. Web-based interventions have been shown to reduce healthcare costs, improve patient satisfaction, convenient for patients, and also increases access to healthcare (Kruse & Beane, 2018). For example, the use of telehealth has been shown to improve care delivery by providing care to patients remotely, saves finances for the patients, is convenient, allows patients to be provided care whenever they are located without having to travel, and more importantly improves health outcomes since the technology enables patients to be monitored remotely. Lessons learned from this study include the importance of implementing health technologies to improve care provision, quality of care, and health outcomes. Therefore, healthcare providers need to leverage health information technology to improve health outcomes.

Conclusion

Technology transforms healthcare and nursing in various ways. All four studies demonstrate a positive link between the use of technology on health outcomes and efficiency. The studies show that technology can influence the performance of healthcare providers and the quality of care. NURS – 6051 Transforming Nursing and Healthcare Technology For example, the studies indicate that technology improves the documentation process, reduces medical errors, and thus improves patient safety, improves communication and care coordination; all these factors contribute to improved quality of care and thus improved healthcare outcomes. Additionally, technology improves efficiency by saving time in healthcare systems and improving communication and care coordination. Technology has seen the healthcare industry move from paper-based documentation to electronic documentation. Moreover, technology has changed the delivery of healthcare, for example through telehealth that enables the provision of healthcare remotely.
