Personal Philosophy Statement

My nursing philosophy is that nursing is a commitment, responsibility and privilege. First, nursing is a commitment because practicing as a nurse is accompanied by significant personal and professional challenges. A nurse works for long hours, is often overworked and underpaid, and faces significant risks in the workplace, such as risk of infection and work stress. Any of these challenges is enough for an individual to leave the profession. However, I continue to practice as a professional nurse, and am intent on advancing my nursing career. That is in spite of the challenges.

Second, nursing is a responsibility because nurses have unique skills and competencies that prime them to provide nursing services. Training as a nurse and being licensed to practice places a legal and ethical/moral responsibility on nursing to provide the best possible care. Practicing as a nurse implies accepting this responsibility and all that come with it in terms of being available to provide care when called upon Nursing Philosophy Assignment Paper.

Third, nursing is a privilege. It is an honor to be trusted to do something as essential, fulfilling and meaningful as nursing. In working as a nurse, I have seek miracles happen every day and get to see people when they are at their most honest and vulnerable. When patients come to me, they come with the hope that I will meet their unique nursing care needs. While I have seen nurses earning respect in the way they are seen by others, I have also seen nurses losing that respect. It is not enough to have the identity of a nurse, it is important to perceive nursing practice as a privilege and not lose the respect that the profession deserves. The privilege that characterizes nursing practice is one that would be evident on nurses who are passionate about using their knowledge, competence and skills to help others who cannot help themselves Nursing Philosophy Assignment Paper.

I vow to be a committed and responsible nurse who brings privilege to the profession.
