Nursing Research Essay Assignment Discussion Paper

My clinical practice is at a nursing home, where I work as a bedside nurse. As a result, my primary responsibility is to offer direct patient care. This includes, among other things, assessing and documenting patients’ symptoms, monitoring their illnesses, conducting diagnostic tests, collecting vital signs, administering medications, and educating patients. Based on this clinical practice, I will formulate a clinical question centered on the bedside shift report. The paper will use a PICOT framework to address the clinical issue and explain why the selected issue is a clinical issue of interest. There will also be five research publications chosen that support nurse intervention on the subject Nursing Research Essay Assignment Discussion Paper.

Clinical Question

In nursing, there are two types of clinical questions: background and foreground. Background questions aim to provide broad information about an illness or condition, while foreground questions aim to find particular ideas that healthcare practitioners may utilize to make better therapeutic judgments. Foreground questions take a more practical approach, focusing on a single patient or group of people. Most of the time, they look into comparisons between nursing interventions or therapeutic approaches. As such, PICOT is a useful method for developing a foreground research question on a specific health concern.

Therefore, my PICOT question will be: In bedside nurses, does completing bedside shift reports, compared to not completing bedside shift reports, lead to increased patient and nurse satisfaction?

P: Bedside nurses

I: completing bedside shift reports

C: not completing bedside shift reports

O: increased patient and nurse satisfaction

T: to be determined

Description of the Clinical Problem

As a bedside nurse, I have learned that a bedside shift report is a procedure for communicating critical information between incoming and outgoing personnel. The SBAR structure is being used in many institutions; however, the report is completed at the nurse’s station or documented in certain cases. Patients are often excluded from this type of shift change report since they are not involved. Patients may experience anxiety as a result of not knowing who their present care provider is. The implementation of a bedside shift report improves communication and allows patients to be more active in their own care. The patient’s assessment may be conducted simultaneously, making it easier to identify any changes in the patient’s condition Nursing Research Essay Assignment Discussion Paper.

Literature Search

Shift handoffs occur in the clinical setting between incoming and outgoing nurse practitioners. This shift report makes a ton of critical information. The nurse bedside shift report technique aims to guarantee a secure handover of care between nursing staff by integrating the patient and family. The patient specifies who is in their family and who is allowed to participate in the bedside shift report. Providing the patient a bedside shift report enables them to comprehend their day’s objectives as well as any tests or treatments that are being withheld. Since the patient knows who their care provider is, it also tends to reduce anxiety.

A literature search was conducted to identify relevant scholarly articles discussing the implementation and efficacy of nurse bedside shift reports. The following databases were accessed: EBSCOhost, PubMed, and Proquest. Keywords used in the search include bedside report, shift report, patient satisfaction, handoff, patient safety, and evidence-based nursing practice.

From my literature search, the following articles were selected:

Best Article Supporting Nursing Interventions

From my search, I discovered that several studies had been conducted on the issue of the bedside shift report, the majority of which have focused on the adoption and efficacy of this intervention in nursing practice. All five papers listed above are pertinent to the chosen subject since they explore the usage of bedside shift reports and their impact on patient experiences and satisfaction. However, I believe that article 4, “Moving shift report to the bedside: An evidence-based quality improvement project,” by McAllen et al. (2018) is the most suited to utilize as reference material for this issue as compared to other articles. The reason for choosing this article is because of the clinical topic it addresses and the information it gives. This study examines the effectiveness of a bedside shift report in improving patient safety, nurse satisfaction, and patient satisfaction (McAllen et al., 2018). An evidence-based practice shift, including bedside report into regular nursing practice, was adopted and assessed on three nursing units over a four-month period in this study (McAllen et al., 2018). Patient satisfaction rose by 76 percent, while nurse satisfaction increased by 67 percent, according to the results of this research. The adoption of a bedside report improved patient safety, nurse satisfaction, and patient satisfaction, in this study (McAllen et al., 2018) Nursing Research Essay Assignment Discussion Paper.

This article, I believe, applies to my clinical issue since it explains in-depth how implementing a bedside shift report in a nursing setting improves nurse and patient satisfaction. Patients, in particular, gain greatly from this intervention since it provides timely and accurate communication between nurses as well as between patients and nurses. Patient anxiety is reduced as a result of the bedside shift report. As such, the piece is quite helpful in addressing the clinical question. Its evidence would aid bedside nurses in making appropriate clinical judgments.

Conclusion

The bedside shift report is a substantial shift from most institutions’ present shift report culture and practice, but it has been linked to increased patient safety as well as nurse and patient satisfaction. During the bedside shift report, patients are more engaged in their treatment. The bedside shift report aids nurse communication by reducing the number of inaccuracies or omissions that might occur during a shift report. The number of issues that may develop with a hospitalized patient has reduced thanks to improved nurse communication. The bedside shift report has the potential to save lives.
