Nursing Theories And Nursing Practice Essay Discussion Paper
Nursing theories are tools that offer the framework for professional nursing competence and practice. In fact, they act as guides to direct the effectiveness, efficiency and competency of nursing practice through defining the profession in terms of rationalising actions within an ethical perspective. At the core of nursing theories is the awareness that patients should receive the best possible care that produces the best outcomes thus ensuring that the theories act as the conjectural and speculative basis for nursing intervention (Alligood, 2014). The selected nursing theory for review is Roy’s Adaptation Theory. It proposes that every patient is a holistic adaptation system that continuously interacts with both the external environment (outside the body to include family, water, air, vegetation, food, and so on) and internal environment (inside the body to include cells, body systems, organs, and so on). The theory holds that the internal and external environments interact as internal and external stimuli to influence the body’s integrity. Given this awareness, the theory adds that the nurses’ main function when providing medical care is to foster the body’s capacity to adapt to the internal and external environments so that it achieves optimal health and wellbeing, high quality of life and dignity in death (Smith & Parker, 2015). As a nurse, I identify with this theory because I believe that nursing is a broad profession with extensive demands on personnel. For patients to achieve good health, nursing personnel must be involved in all aspect of care by moderating how patients interact with the environment. As such, I must strive to improve my knowledge, experience, skills and competence as a nurse to ensure that I have the capacity to provide the best possible care that addresses the patients’ needs for the best outcomes Nursing Theories And Nursing Practice Essay Discussion Paper.

Counselling theory
The counselling theory under review is the Structural Family Theory. On one hand, the theory holds that family dynamics are best understood through applying psychological frameworks. In this case, a family is a small unit that exists and operates within larger units that include culture, community and organization. The larger units are comprised of more than one family. As a system, the family is dynamic and experiences changes over time even as the family members become older, change (deaths, births, additions and expulsions), and improve their interactions. On the other hand, the theory accept that while a family should ideally be part of a system that conforms to established structures (in terms of interactions and relationships), that is not are the case. In fact, there are occasions when it deviates from the established structures, becomes detrimental to one or more members, and becomes a source of concern. The theory explains these deviations as dysfunctions whereby the family’s interactions and operations are negatively affected by the members’ inability to engage each other in a health manner. The theory further adds that the interactions and operations are unconscious patterns among the members who established the rules for engagement in terms of hierarchy, rivalries, and alliances. Besides that, it mentions that the dysfunction is not resultant of problems with interactions and operations. Rather, it is the result of the unconscious patterns that symptomatically self-reinforce to worsen the dysfunction (Thompson, 2016). For example, an adult members of the family could use the interest authority, power and position in the hierarchy to oppress the younger members of the family who would then become withdrawn and apprehensive even as they similarly oppress those who are younger than them thus creating a disengaged and distant environment within the family. The oppression is amplified within the family and self-perpetuates the harmful interactions and dysfunction. The theory proposes that the dysfunction is best addressed by engaging the family members in identifying their strengths and weaknesses with the focus being on how to leverage the strengths and minimize the weaknesses so that more productive interactions are realized in terms of healthy interactions (Thompson, 2016)Nursing Theories And Nursing Practice Essay Discussion Paper.
Practicum goals and objectives
I have three goals that I intend to achieve by the end of the practicum. The first goal is to gain practical nursing experience. The second goal is to enhance my confidence in completing nursing tasks. The final goal is to enhance the confidence that patients have in nursing care. In addition to the three goals, I intend to achieve three objectives. The first objective is to learn about nursing care and how to plan for care provision. The second objective is to match the current care realities to nursing practice. The final objective is to learn how to develop written nursing care plans.
Timeline of practicum activities
To achieve the three goals and three objectives, I intend to engage in three practicum activities. The first activity is to acquire and apply knowledge on how to have proper relations with my patients in terms of communication. The second activity will entail making use of the knowledge, experience and skills I have acquire to identify the needs of patients and alert other medical personnel on these needs. The final activity will entail gaining a better understanding of and applying nursing theories to aid my nursing practice and interactions with other stakeholders. I intend to complete the three activities by the end of the practicum Nursing Theories And Nursing Practice Essay Discussion Paper.
