The comfort theory was established in the 1990s by Katherine Kolcaba. There were many fields involved in the development of this theory. These fields included English, medicine, ergonomics, nursing, and psychology. Comfort was categorized into three different kinds: relief, ease, and otherworldliness. The behaviors associated with comfort were first noticed in the 1980s when the concept of comfort was first investigated. The earlier research of Henderson, Nightingale, and other philosophers served as a springboard for the creation of the theory itself. In order to create the theory, many variables were considered, including the author’s doctoral dissertation and graduate thesis. Katherine came to the conclusion that comfort was a great concept in nursing after undertaking a concept assessment of comfort that included the aforementioned fields (Kolcaba, 2015). This is due to the fact that it was linked with practices that build and empower individuals in order for them to achieve greater health. It dawned on Katherine that the theory might potentially sustain patient comfort ahead of treatment, thus improving health outcomes.
