For most American children-home care is now a part of their lives. From the first months of life up to the time when they are old enough for school to fend for themselves, spend more and more children are more and more time in the care of other adults than their parents, in some form of day care or in an early childhood development program. Currently about 60% of American children are alien to take part in the preschool age: Approximately half attended a day care center, the others are in day care (at home or in the home of the caregiver), with an aunt, with a grandmother or a nanny. The concept of childcare was perhaps more familiar and convenient for some decades. Different disciplines or visions have contributed to volume of knowledge, much of which has not been translated into simple tips, designed for those who have the daily task of raising a toddler. Since the 1960s, the United States has experienced an increase in the enrollment of young children in center-based early childhood experiences. In 1965, less than 10 % of children aged 3 to 5 years were enrolled in nursery school. By 1999, 60 % of 3 to 5 year old children were enrolled in center-based early childhood care and education programs. As the need for early childhood programs increased, so has the volume of research conducted to determine the effects of childcare on young children’s development. As the results from these investigations became public the interest of parents, policymakers, and practitioners in the quality of childcare became stronger. Investigators have identified that high quality and proper childcare leads to positive student outcomes including cognitive and social development, increased responsiveness, and increased language skills. Although the benefits of high quality care were positive, it was of concern to learn that the majority of childcare was of moderate to poor quality. The children who attended these improper and poor quality centers did not reap the academic and social benefits associated with high quality childcare. Recent studies show that the developing brain of a child is affected by his earliest experiences with the adults in their world.
