Qualitative Research Approaches Supporting Nursing Practice
Qualitative research is a naturalistic inquiry process targeted at gaining an in-depth awareness of a phenomenon within the natural setting. Unlike quantitative research that focuses on answering questions about ‘what’, qualitative research focuses on answering questions about ‘why’. In fact, qualitative research improves understanding of social phenomenon by exploring the direct experiences of persons who act as agents and make meaning of the phenomenon. The nature of qualitative research calls for a unique inquiry approach that is able to directly engage the participants while studying human phenomena with explicit rendering to gain a deeper understanding (Polit & Beck, 2018). This paper discusses the use of qualitative research to support nursing practice Qualitative Research Approaches Supporting Nursing Practice.

Describe the topic or issue in nursing practice that you selected and explain why.
An issue of interest in nursing practice is the delivery of nursing care that results in high satisfactory levels among the patients. Patient satisfaction levels have an effect on patient retention and clinical outcomes, as well as medical malpractice claims. In addition, it has an effect on the delivery of quality health care that is patient-centered, efficient and timely (Leavy, 2020). Besides that, the patient is a consumer, and in this position, the organization’s focus would be on improving patient satisfaction to ensure patient loyalty and improve patient retention. Furthermore, improving patient satisfaction makes the organization less vulnerable to price wars, ensures consistent profitability, increase staff morale, address accreditation issues, and reduce risk of malpractice suits. Moreover, patient satisfaction is an important and effective proxy indicator for measuring the success of nurses (Ellis, 2018) Qualitative Research Approaches Supporting Nursing Practice.
Explain which qualitative research design approach that you selected to address this topic or issue and describe the method you chose.
A narrative method of qualitative research that gathers facts and data from participating patients is considered appropriate. This would collect information through interviews with the patients in which they present information on the issues that affect their satisfaction levels. Based on the identified themes, the collected information can then be pierced together to derive answers about the issues that affect patients’ satisfaction levels, and offer suggestions on how improvements can be made. With this method, the health care organization can understand the challenges faced by their patients, which can in turn be utilized for innovation and development of health care products and services (Ellis, 2018)Qualitative Research Approaches Supporting Nursing Practice.
Justify why this qualitative research design approach would be best suited for this topic or issue and explain how this approach will better inform improvements for nursing practice for the topic or issue that you selected.
The identified qualitative research method (narrative method that uses interviews to collect data) is suited for the topic because of five reasons. First, it provides a rich description of patient experiences as a complex phenomenon. Second, it tracks unique and/or unexpected changes in the patients’ satisfaction levels. This can show which measures are working in terms of improving the patients’ satisfaction levels. Third, it illuminates the experiences and interpretation by patients with widely differing stakes and roles. Fourth, it gives voice to patients whose views are rarely heard. Fifth, it conducts an initial exploration to generate and test hypotheses on issues that affect patients’ satisfaction levels (Gray & Grove, 2020)Qualitative Research Approaches Supporting Nursing Practice.
Explain why it is important for the DNP-prepared nurse to understand qualitative research approaches for nursing practice.
It is important for a DNP-prepared nurse to understand qualitative research approaches (ethnography, narrative, phenomenology, grounded theory and case study) because it addresses research questions on ‘how’ and ‘why’, while enabling a deeper understanding of context, phenomena and experiences. This awareness allows the nurse/researcher to ask questions on human experiences that cannot be easily put into numbers. Through understanding the different qualitative research approaches, nurses are able to determine which specific approach can provide an explicit rendering of broad patterns, order and structure found among a group of participants (Gray & Grove, 2020)Qualitative Research Approaches Supporting Nursing Practice.

Assignment 3: Qualitative Research Approaches to Support Nursing Practice When researchers want to seek group interaction, a focus group may be utilized in a qualitative research study. “Focus groups, or groups interviews, are composed of similar participants to encourage interaction among the participants” (Gray & Grove, 2020).These interactions cannot be evaluated in a traditional one-on-one interview, but in a group setting, researchers have the opportunity to explore perceptions, attitudes, and positioning within a group. Photo Credit: Getty Images Take for example, a researcher exploring why women report inadequate care from medical professionals versus their male counterparts. A focus group might illicit responses more detailed and complex versus simply in a traditional interview, especially if the women in the group all report a similar experience in their care. In a focus group setting, individuals may be able to find connection in meaning to share an experience that might be missed in a different format. For this Assignment, explore the use of focus groups in qualitative research Qualitative Research Approaches Supporting Nursing Practice.
Consider the effectiveness of the method and examine how this approach might lend itself to a mixed method of study. Reference: Gray, J. R., & Grove, S. K. (2020). To Prepare: Review the Learning Resources for this week and reflect on the use of focus groups and interviews in qualitative research designs. Select a topic or issue in nursing practice to focus on for this Discussion. Consider which type of qualitative research design, focus groups or interviews, might be most appropriate for the topic or issue in nursing practice and why. How will this type of qualitative research design support the aims of addressing the topic or issue for nursing practice? The Assignment: (1–2 pages) Describe the topic or issue in nursing practice that you selected and explain why. Explain which qualitative research design approach that you selected to address this topic or issue and describe the method you chose. Be specific. Justify why this qualitative research design approach would be best suited for this topic or issue and explain how this approach will better inform improvements for nursing practice for the topic or issue that you selected. Be specific and provide examples. Explain why it is important for the DNP-prepared nurse to understand qualitative research approaches for nursing practice.
