Being at the centre of healthcare provision, nurses play a critical role in providing quality healthcare. The sources of quality in healthcare range from providing patient-oriented care to ensuring safety and taking part in developing system quality and safety standards (Yuan, & Chung, 2016). Although there is no clear literature on competency standards in primary healthcare, limited research reveals that competent care is associated with communication, education, team cohesion, professionalism, and incorporation of technology. All these standards are geared towards enhancing patient safety, minimizing adverse effects, and optimizing productivity and patient outcomes. Nurses are also vital in supporting the construction of safe equipment, workplaces, and processes, and making informed decisions concerning the improvement of quality care (Oldland et al., 2020).
