Reflective Narrative on New Practice Approaches
This week’s experience in the emergency department has been quite instructive with regard to my understanding of the new approaches to nursing practice. The objective of understanding these new approaches is that I may use them to improve patient satisfaction scores in the department. Their implementation requires that I understand the organizational culture of the institution, the important stakeholders apart from the patients, the effective strategy of implementing the same, and how to work with other caregivers in the spirit of interprofessional collaboration.Reflective Narrative on New Practice Approaches

The new practice approaches that I have learnt and internalized this week therefore are (i) patient-centered care, and (ii) technology-based care (Toruner, 2018). Through my interaction with the staff and my preceptor, I have learnt that patent-centered care is the act of offering care to the patient from their own perspective. I have learnt that this reinforces the respect for the bioethical principle of autonomy that dictates that the patient is the one who should decide the direction that their care will take. I have also learnt that patient-centered care is actually a quality improvement (QI) issue. According to the Institute of Medicine or IOM, quality healthcare is care that is effective, safe, efficient, patient-centered, timely, and equitable.Reflective Narrative on New Practice Approaches
I have also learnt this week that technology-based care is the other new approach to nursing practice. I have understood that technology in healthcare is also a quality improvement issue. This is because of the document titled To Err Is Human, also published by the IOM and which stated that a large number of patients had been dying as a result of preventable human medical errors. Technology was suggested as a possible solution to preventing these errors that destroyed the quality of care. I am no well-informed and equipped to apply the same new approaches to nursing care in my practice going forward.
