HEENT: A Previous Experience during the Assessment, Potential Difficulties/ Questions, and the Role of the Christian Worldview and Compassion

The HEENT assessment is part of the objective evaluation of a patient and refers to assessment of the head, the eyes, the ears, the nose, and the throat (Ball et al., 2019; Bickley, 2017). A past experience the author has encountered when completing this particular assessment involved a hydrocephalic toddler who was just two and a half years old. Being that the child was definitely not normocephalic; the proportions of the other structures on the head had to be evaluated with caution in order not to err.The HEENT Assessment Discussion

Some difficulties that could potentially arise when performing this assessment include difficulties with correct visualization of the tympanic membrane during otoscopy (such as erroneous documentation of fluid level behind the tympanium when it is actually not there), misinterpretation of eye redness in a child which could have been the result of an allergic reaction unknown to the parent, and difficulty visualizing the throat of a child since they cannot voluntarily open their mouth wide enough. Some examples of potential strategies that can be used to overcome some of these difficulties include getting an assistant (a professional like a nurse, not the parent) to help you with holding and positioning the child, using an otoscope with good lighting, and taking some time to play with the child before starting the examination.

The Christian worldview holds that we are created in the image of God and that only God has the power to give life and take it. The role of this worldview and compassion in the HEENT assessment is in the fact that it helps the examiner view any abnormalities found in the context of God’s creation. By also having empathy and compassion without being judgemental, the examining clinician gains the patient’s trust or that of their parent. This is important because it facilitates holistic care and speeds up recovery.  References
