Drug addiction affects people of all races, ages and cultures. The major widespread addictive prescription drugs include Vicodin, Demerol, Ritalin, and Amphetamines, while the most popular illegal drugs include Cannabis, and others (Barnard, 2006). To address the issue of drug addiction, it is necessary to study the major causes of this problem. According to researchers, “addiction begins when the brain comes into contact with and addicting substance, such as drugs or alcohol”(DuPont, 2013, p. 4). As a rule, drug addiction is caused by social and psychological factors, such as job stress, family problems, peer pressure, school-related problems, financial and economic problems, health problems, loneliness, and other factors (Barnard, 2006; DuPont, 2013). Bardo and colleagues (2011) state that “addiction risk is linked to a number of factors including genetics and adverse environmental events as well as behavioral traits such as reward sensitivity and impulsivity”(p. 63). The major causes of drug addiction help to assess the key problems that are associated with drug addiction.

Besides, people who suffer from drug addiction should be provided social network support that could help stop the use of drugs (Bardo et al., 2011).
