Journal of Evidence-Based Social Work Essay Discussion Paper

Generally, nursing is a field that involves overcoming hurdles and demonstrating professional behavior. As I began my practicum in primary care, I found myself in exactly this situation. Focusing on my strengths, overcoming my weaknesses, and embracing opportunities for development and growth was the main objective I had set for myself. Education for safe and competent nurses necessitates the incorporation of critical reflection in all aspects of the nursing curriculum (Howatson-Jones, 2016) Journal of Evidence-Based Social Work Essay Discussion Paper.

The three most challenging patients

Each of the three encounters that provided abundant educational experience had a similar theme of direct communication combined with compassionate listening in order to deliver the most suitable information. In one case, a client came in complaining of abdominal discomfort and nausea along with a positive Rovsing’s sign, but was hesitant to pursue emergency care for what he believed was appendicitis. Client #2 reported chest pains, pressure, and palpitations, in addition to hypertension, but declined to have an inpatient cardiac workup as a precaution. As a result of taking a new blood pressure medicine, the third client fainted and developed severe kidney damage, which required hospitalization for treatment and rehabilitation. He claimed that my preceptor was at fault for putting him on that drug. Since he did not trust her choice, the client was contemplating whether or not to consult any nurse practitioners at all Journal of Evidence-Based Social Work Essay Discussion Paper.

What did you learn from this experience?

From these experiences, I learned that all patients’ choices should be founded on their own circumstances or issues, regardless of the healthcare professional’s reasoning.

What resources did you have available?

My preceptor, three other doctors, and one advanced practice nurse were available to me for consultation when I was in a challenging position. The help I received from knowledgeable colleagues was invaluable during difficult situations. Additionally, the NASW code of ethics serves an important part in educating employees on ways to deal with various circumstances in the most effective manner (Walters & Hurst, 2020) Journal of Evidence-Based Social Work Essay Discussion Paper.

What evidence-based practice did you use for this patient?

Clear communication techniques might help patients feel acknowledged by allowing them to express themselves. The patients are also motivated to offer us correct and pertinent information and to assist us in navigating the diagnostic procedure so that we do not jeopardize our schedules (Kwame & Petrucka, 2020). The information was delivered empathically by sitting beside the client rather than standing over them, resulting in an enhanced client experience and decreased dissatisfaction.

What new skills are you learning?

Each contact with a patient served as a learning experience for me. I started practicing and refining my interviewing skills from the time of the first contact during a visit until the time of the evaluation. Patient visits were enhanced by an increased feeling of professionalism when eye contact and a clinical relationship were established with the client. As a newbie, I was able to interpret EKGs, improve my assessment abilities for gastrointestinal concerns, find relevant applications for cardiovascular events and instruments, and choose the most suitable antihypertensive drugs Journal of Evidence-Based Social Work Essay Discussion Paper.

 What would you do differently?

In many instances, it was hard to analyze a client’s electronic record prior to entering the room because of time limitations. I spent a lot of time navigating the clinical framework while posing questions that I should have looked up prior to entering the room. My familiarity with the framework to speed this task grew as the weeks went by.

How are you managing patient flow and volume?

It has been easier for me to handle the large number of patients I see on a daily basis because of my schedule. My situation has improved now that I am conscious of how many clients I must handle at a given time period.

Reflect on how to improve your skills and knowledge and communicate that back to your Preceptor

Clinical rotations provide a valuable educational experience. The guidance I received pushed me to seek assistance and to learn from my mistakes in the future. It is only through an awareness of my own strengths and weaknesses that I can create objectives for myself, be more equipped to deal with patient problems, and develop my ability to think critically. I absorbed all I could from my preceptor and relished the opportunity to care for patients in this environment Journal of Evidence-Based Social Work Essay Discussion Paper.

How are you doing? What is missing?

With each passing day of my clinical rotation, I was able to noticeably improve in both confidence and professionalism. The change from seasoned nurse to newbie clinician was difficult at first, but as I gained confidence in the new role, I became happier with my overall performance. Occasionally, I had the impression that my efforts were contributing to a positive change in the lives of others.

In this clinical rotation, a large number of the competencies on the beginning skills checklist were not available. Suturing opportunities were minimal at the facility, which is something I am curious to learn more about. This is something I aim to integrate into my next clinical rotation Journal of Evidence-Based Social Work Essay Discussion Paper.

What type of feedback are you receiving from your Preceptor?

During the clinical rotation, I urged my preceptor to put me in situations where my competence and abilities would be tested and improved. While on rotation, my preceptor was open and engaged with me the whole time. She gave me feedback on my evaluation approaches, which helped me improve my performance during the next appointments. In order to get the most out of my experience, I was open-minded and addressed my own objectives with her (Furqan & Zakaria, 2017). She created a great learning environment and commended me on a variety of elements of my caregiving performance. She helped me identify areas for growth and aided me in documenting the results. We spoke about my shortcomings, which she discovered via musculoskeletal assessments, and she set up appointments for me to practice those abilities.

WK 10 Assignment: i-Human Case Study: Evaluating and Managing Neurologic Conditions

As an advanced practice nurse, you will likely observe patients who experience neurological conditions. While patients with neurological conditions may present typical physical manifestations, such as headaches, dizziness, weakness, and fatigue, many manifestations may not be overtly physical, such as declining memory and social withdrawal. In all cases, your differential diagnosis must take into consideration the role of the patient history and physical examination.
