In the United States, healthcare reforms contributed to a robust and comprehensive primary care provided by healthcare providers. In particular, three main specialties deliver primary care which includes: general pediatrics, general internal medicine and family medicine (Rao & Pilot, 2014). Primary care refers to the daily care that is delivered by providers which focuses on illness prevention, diagnoses and treatment of conditions which do necessarily need hospital care. In our clinic setting, we provide care to all patients irrespective of age starting with infants and toddlers to adolescents, young adults and the elderly. However, those who frequently visit the primary care clinic setting are young adults and the elderly. The ten most common diagnoses that are seen are: hypertension, anxiety, diabetes, osteoarthritis, asthma, urinary tract infection, acute upper respiratory tract infections, allergic rhinitis, migraines and headache (Glass et al., 2017).
When preparing for my clinical, the tools and guidelines that I become familiar with the ANA clinical practice guidelines for nurses which provides the standards of best practice for specific illnesses and clearly outlines the functions that should be done by a nurse including: conducting assessments, diagnosing, care implementation and co-ordination, prescribing medications and health promotion/advocacy.
